Hi all,

I am using Dr Lisa's chart and Tanya's chart for finding the phosphorus levels in foods. I know what the recommended levels are when you use the % dry matter measure, but I can't find it for the mg/100-kcal level.

Can anyone point me to, or does anyone know, what the target levels are in the second measuring system? I am aiming for under 2%, which I know is high, but Rosie still has normal CR and her phosphorus is 4.2. Her BUN was 50. Her BUN has been higher in the past (58) as have her CR (mildly over normal) and phosphorus (4.4). So, I am looking just to take some of the strain off her kidneys.

She will eat only pate foods, which elminates so many really good ones!

Thanks!

Hi Lydia,
Here's a paragraph that I found by endocrinologist Dr Mark E Peterson (the link to the whole article follows):

"For this purpose, a phosphate content that is < 100 mg per 100 kcal is ideal, especially in a cat with severe kidney disease. This can be done either by feeding a prescription diet (again, these are too low in protein) or having a homemade diet formulated. In cats with mild or early kidney disease, use of an OTC diet with lower phosphate levels may be used. If an OTC diet is selected, look for one that contains < 250 mg of phosphate per 100 kcal. You may have to call a company for specific information. Fish-based cat foods are often high in phosphorus, so I stay away from these diets for cats with CKD."

Here's the link to the article (hoping this helps...):

Edited to add: BTW, Many of us have used 'ordinary' foods with phosphorous binders added to reduce phosphorous absorption.

Everything on that list is under 1% phosphorus DM - with a few of them, while not at the prescription food level, being well under. Our old girl, Shadow managed to keep her phosphorus well within range all the way through CKD with food at these levels - Rosa is just that little more difficult, but her phosphorus was high on diagnosis.
