Hi all,

I apologize if this is posted somewhere. I have a hard time finding specific things. Please forgive me.

I just want to know when I am looking at all these wet food cat lists online what percentage of Phosphorus, Fiber, Kcal (cal), Fat do I need to look for.. between what and what of each? I know carbs I want to be between 0%-10% correct? I actually prefer 0%-5% personally, but I am unsure of the other percentages of things listed.

Thanks a million!!! :)

Love,
Siloh and his momma!

Hi Aimee,

Regarding the other percentages, that may depend on what else is going on with your kitty, and whether there are any other health issues. A kitty with kidney disease may want to have the phosphorous content kept lower (and some folks aim to do this with older kitties that don't have kidney problems too); and some kitties (esp. those prone to pancreatitis and digestive issues) may do better on foods with a lower fat content. A kitty that needs to lose weight may do better with less calories and/or increased water content (or a little extra water can be added to the food).

Does your kitty have any health issues apart from his diabetes?

Eliz

Unless your cat has kidney insufficiency, phosphorus is not a concern. Fiber would only be a concern if the cat has constipation problems or diarrhea in which case high fiber helps. the number of calories and fat are really not a concerns except for calories you have to feed enough to maintain weight.

Well, he doesn't have diabetes or kidney issues like my other baby did, but he is overweight and that worries me constantly. It makes me feel like a horrible momma. So, I just want to find the best food to get his weight down, and keep him from diabetes. So I figured low carb and low fat would be the best thing. I wasn't sure about needing low phosphorus or low carb as well. He doesn't play a whole lot. The puppy pesters him off and on, and I let her to keep him as active as possible. He plays with me now and then, but it's not for long. He pretty much just wants to lay in my lap and cuddle 24/7. lol

@Aimee77 if you do decide that phosphorus is an issue, I believe the goal is to have something below 1%. My cat has had kidney issues in the past and his prescription kidney diet (K/D) is 0.5% phosphorus.

I'd be interested in learning the range for fat as I have no idea about the fat percentages and what the percentage cut offs are for high fat vs. low fat.

Thank you kindly for the reply. I stress over his food all of the time. Again, I thinm I'll go on back to Tiki cat, although it's exp I want him healthy as long as he lives .I wish I could keep him forever. :)
