Hi guys, long time no see!

I finally found a store in Quebec that sells Natures Variety Instinct Raw Frozen Chicken Bites!
Since my cat is a diebetic in remission (and would like to keep it that way!) + stage 2 CKD, I'm always looking for a food that's both low in carbs and phosphorus.

Based on Lisa Pierson's food chart, Nature's variety raw chicken is 1% carb, 0.64% Phos DM.
http://www.catinfo.org/docs/FoodChartPublic9-22-12.pdf

But then, why is it on Nature's variety's website I cant get any close to that phosphorus number when I calculate it myself?

Guaranteed Analysis
Crude Protein (min)15 %
Crude Fat (min)9 %
Crude Fiber (max)2 %
Moisture (max)67 %
*Omega 6 Fatty Acids (min)2.7 %
*Omega 3 Fatty Acids (min)0.22 %

Calcium 1 %
Phosphorus 0.67 %
Potassium 0.22 %
Sodium 0.29 %
Magnesium 0.05 %
Zinc 23.6 mg/kg

Normally I would calculate the Phos DM like this :
100 - 67 (% moisture) = 33
0.67 (phos) / 33 (DM) X 100 = 2.03%!!

If that is the case, then this food is one of the highest in phosphorus. But since Lisa Pierson's food chart claims it is only 0.64%, I want to understand why I am not getting this number!

Can anyone help me figure out what's wrong with my calculation?

Hi Kim,
(Lovely to 'see you' BTW :bighug: )

The different calculation results may be due to the fact that US foods list 'minimum/maximum' values for the various elements; and what is on the label may not be an accurate representation of what is in the tin/carton at any given time.
In order to get the actual 'as fed' values it's usually necessary to contact the manufacturer and ask for them. I understand that all of Dr Pierson's figures have been done using the (then) current as fed values from the manufacturer.
However, I think her calculations were done a few years ago (?) and it may also be that the recipe has changed...

I calculate phos the same way that you do. (And there is also this nifty dry matter calculator: http://fnae.org/dmb.html?inputboxm=64&inputboxi=0.67&button.x=62&button.y=22&button=Click )

Changing the subject, you've been in my thoughts recently because Bron @Bron and Sheba started a thread that I thought might interest you. It's about home-prepared diets for cats with kidney disease: Home prepared diet of CRD cats

I second that. The best thing to do now is to contact the company via email/phone. They can give you the exact DM phosphorus value.

Oh my god, I am so disappointed... I had that specific brand in mind since a very long time and now I just got the answer from the customer's service :

INSTINCT RAW DIET FOR CAT - Chicken
PHOSPHORUS
As Fed : 0.67%
Dry Matter : 2.03%

2.03% is the worst! I am currently feeding my cat with Weruva Steak frites which is 0.57 Phos DM, there's no way I can feed her with something as high as 2.03%
:(
Weruva is SOOOO expensive, it's ruining me! But my cat loves it and it makes her BUN, CRE and everything else almost perfect and stable! I just wanted to change because of the price of these damn Weruva cans... I wish we lived in the stated where they are ALMOST affordable. Here the stores are selling them like they were little cans of caviar. It currently costs me 8,50$CAD a day (2 cans per day)... there's NOTHING more expensive on the market except for Tiki Cat.

Oh and the other solution I was thinking of (Evo chicken-turkey), is not going to work either.... They no longer export their products to Canada.
I am so unlucky! The people with a CKD cat in Quebec are doomed! unless they are rich of course.
Even if I decided to ride across the border, the customs probably wouldn't let me in with 100 cans of cat food!

OMG, I've been using Nature's Variety Instinct Raw chicken for a while now, had no idea it was so high in phosphorus! :( Thank you for the information, looks like I have to re-think my cats' diets now, too.

I just ordered a case of Natures Variety instinct but it was the chicken formula not the raw chicken, is there a different? My cat has CKD as well.
