Hello everyone,
Does anyone have a furbaby that has both HyperT & Diabetes at the same time?
Is he or she hard to regulate?
What did you do to get he or she regulated?
Thanks in advance.
Paula (Michael's Mom)

I don't have any experience with HyperT, but this reply will boost up your condo. Did you try posting on the Main Health forum as well?

Thanks, Dyana
No, I will do that right now.
Healing vines to JD. We hope he is a lot better today. Michael sends his get well purrs.

Hi Paula, I don't have experience with HyperT and diabetes, but we have had several kitties here that have had both - as well as hypothyroid. It can make it harder to regulate the cat, causing a type of insulin resistance. If you are interested in technical details, here is a paper on Insulin Resistance in Cats. Getting the hyperthyroidism under control seems to help. Some kitties that I remember having both are Bruce/Simon. Simon has gone OTJ but has gone back on the juice a couple of times when his hyperthyroidism goes out of control. Kelly's Tomcat is quite well regulated.

Wendy,
Thanks a bunch for all the info!
Maybe there is a chance Michael can be regulated!

Hi Paula,
I'll try to answer your questions tomorrow because it is very late tonight. My previous diabetic kitty, Stu (GA), had Hyper T (and also CRF).

In the meantime you will find good information on the website of Dr. Mark Peterson, who pioneered the radio iodine treatment (I-131) for Hyper T and is also an authority on feline diabetes: http://www.animalendocrine.com/hypurrcat/hypurrcat/

I hope that Michael will be fine. Many kitties here have had both conditions. Some have had the I-131 treatment (which cures Hyper T), and some have managed it with Methimazole.

Have a good evening,

Ella & Rusty

Hi Paula, I am confused. When you say "regulated" are you meaning the diabetes is regulated or is the Hyperthyroid regulated?

That link Ella provided is an excellent resource! My Tiger was diagnosed with Hyperthyroid and FD in February of this year. My vet suggested treating for hyperthyroid first; except I was unable to get Tiger to accept Tapazole. So we had the radio-iodine treatment done in March. Unfortunately, at our 3 month check up in July I discovered Tiger's thyroid was non-functioning, and so she now gets Levothyroxine in a chicken flavored compound. I had bloodwork done a few weeks ago, her Tscore was almost back to normal, which was encouraging. Her follow up visit will be this Friday.

Ella, Ruth thanks for the replys.
Ella, thanks for Mark Petersons link. Good info.
Ruth, Michael is not regulated. His hyperT is not controlled. he is taking tapazole. 2.5mg sid. His diabetes isn't regulated either. Because of the two diseases it is very hard to control both.
I really appreciate the help.
Paula
