Sorry about not posting yesterday. How do I do the different amounts? Right now I get how to do a full unit and a half unit but she was at 273 this morning and 1 unit is too much I think but I am pretty sure .5 won't be enough to be fully effective. I have the u100 1/2 cc syringes.

U-100 insulin has 100 units per mL; U-40 insulin has 40 units per mL. Thus, a U-40 insulin is 40% of the concentration.

So each half unit mark on a U-100 syringe = 0.2 units of U-40
0.5 mark -> 0.2 of U-40
1.0 mark -> 0.4 of U-40
1.5 mark -> 0.6 of U-40
2.0 mark -> 0.8 of U-40
2.5 mark -> 1.0 of U-40

my syringe doesn't have the half mark thing its first line is 1 unit. My question is how do I know when I am giving the different doses without those marks? I am eyeballing the half dose right now.

A couple of options:
1) eyeball it
2) get calipers
3) use a ruler with millimeter markings, line it up with the syringe base and use a consistent line, which son't equal a precise volume, but will be more consistent measuring
4) Use a conversion table (each half unit mark on a U-100 syringe equals 0.2 units of ProZinc)

Thanks! My vet said use the u100 syringes but can I use those and got to the 1/3cc instead of the 1/2cc because the 1/3 cc has the half marks. So let me make sure I am understanding this the vet told me to go to the first line that was 1 unit. But really she is getting .4 of the u40?

If you are using U-100 syringes with whole unit markings and the insulin is U-40 ProZinc or PZI, then yes, you are giving 0.4 units.

You can use the 3/10 cc (aka mL) syringes with half unit marks; those will let you dose in 0.2 unit increments of ProZinc or U-40 PZI.

When you say 1/3cc do you mean 3/10cc?

I use the 3/10cc syringes with half marks. They are very easy to use for small doses AND you can use them for larger doses too....more flexibility and only needing one size/type syringe.

Print out the conversion chart Sue posted below and keep it with your syringes. Even though I have been using them for a while now, I still always "double-check" the conversion so I am sure I am doing the correct amount.

oops yeah I meant the 3/10 as soon as the ones I have are gone I will switch over to them. I got these as part of the package my vet sent home with me.

:cool: If you have any questions .... give us a post. :smile:

Check your insulin vial, too. It's possible that pzi is u-40 or u-100. Since the vet gave you u-100 needles, you may have u-100 concentrated insulin.

Your signature says ProZinc, which is a U-40 insulin.

Someone else indicated your are using PZI, which can be either U-40 or U-100.

Please clarify which insulin you are using and if PZI, whether it is U-40 or U-100.
