If I don't think Pumbaa has eaten enough to offset the insulin, or if he's just not interested in the food I have put out, I sprinkle a little Parmesan cheese on it, and he's all over that food like flies on horse dung!

I learned the Parmesan trick on catinfo.org. I always have Parmesan in my house and didn't have to purchase yet another FD item, as in the FortiFlora.

What is funny now is that the minute I take the Parmesan container out of the fridge and shake it, Pumbaa comes running! This is such a help to get him to eat when I think he needs to eat!

On the other hand, my civvie, Larry, ignores the Parmesan. I don't think he likes it. But that is okay because he is fine, and he is eating/peeing/pooping just fine, as far as I know. And he still loves me, even though I took away his addiction food, as in the high-carb dry, that he used to regularly gorge himself on and then barf up, all the time.

Both of my cats are now sleeker and more muscular, just after 2 months of low carbs. And their coats are so much better, too!

I'm rambling because I am a sleep-deprived idiot. I need to nap for 2 hours and then check Pumbaa again at +6.

What kind of parmesan do you use -- the dry kind that it sold on the shelf next to the spaghetti (like Kraft) or the fresh parmesan?

I had no problem with the Kraft parm that is sold next to the pasta, but i wouldn't give him the stuff I recently bought - it's low fat wal-mart brand and it tastes horrible....

Melanie, I just use the canned, on the shelf variety. Not Kraft, I get mine from Fresh & Easy, and it's actually a blend of Parmesan, Romano and Asiago.

And it doesn't take much...just a tiny sprinkle on the food.

Thank you!! I will try that today. Ninja is not eating much at all, though vet says once her blood sugar levels go down she should start to get hungry again. She's a notoriously picky eater and only wants Hills Science Diet original formula dry (!!!) when she is eating. Other than a tablespoon of milk as a treat, that's all she has ever eaten her entire life (won't even TRY ANYTHING ELSE). So going to be a challenge getting her to the wet/canned food. My plan is to keep her eating...even if it is the Hills dry for the next few days, then as the Lantus starts working with her blood sugar levels and she shows more interest in eating, to try to introduce some wet food with Parmesan. Ninja loves milk so maybe will love the cheese too. Vet says it is better for her to eat the dry than nothing at all over the next few days (if those are our only two choices). But I will be diligent in working on her, slowly but surely, to get her off the dry.

I had ordered FortiFlora because Junior was having eating problems, just getting him back to normal I Hope,
but the parmesan I bet is cheaper than Forti Flora!

I have noticed lots of problems with eating lately, is it due to the weather changes, although we are all over the world...

just a thought...

Mine both love parmesan, I buy the Kraft canned, both the powdery kind and the type that is more shredded, and they like both. However, it doesn't really entice them to eat food they otherwise don't like, they just eat the parmesan off the top! But I will give them a sprinkle of just the cheese as a treat, haven't found any other LC treats Shady likes.
