Not sure if I'm just being paranoid or not but I gave Dasher his first insulin shot 2 1/2 hours ago and he on my bed laying there . He does sleep during the day but he was just lookng at me , could his BS have already dropped too low? I can't buy my meter until tonight so I can't test him.....I'm thinking I'm on crazy overdrive right now.

What kind of insulin, and how much?

I wouldn't worry too much. Hidey was the same way when he first started insulin, I think its just the body getting used to it. Theres no way to really tell at the moment without a bg reading though. I would just monitor how he is doing throughout the day, and check bg as soon as you get the kit. Have you seen all the tips on how to get a successful drop of blood for bg test? I know your first couple of tests can get pretty frustrating.

When Saoirse first started treatment she was very lethargic for the first few days as her body started getting used to the insulin (Caninsulin). I was out of my mind with worry because I had no idea what was happening with her. The veterinary practice she was with at the time did not support home testing (which I wanted to do). The experience was really scary. It'll be much easier to cope when you're home testing. Being able to check BG at anytime is priceless in terms of how much peace of mind it will give you.

All that said, is your kitty eating OK? As suggested above, I'd recommend monitoring closely - get him up and make sure he can walk around OK, get his attention to check alertness - and making sure he eats OK. Have you checked out the HYPO sticky at the top of this board? It has a list of symptoms that you can check for. If you're in any doubt, ring your vet for advice. Always better to pester the vetty bean and have a safe kitty.

Welcome aboard and don't be scared, there are many of us in the same boat with you! My sugar kitty did the same thing the day I gave first shot and I just followed him around and kept a close eye on him.Glad that you are getting a meter soon to home test.,then when you have a doubt you can find out and ease your mind quickly.Best of luck to you and your kitty!

Paranoid is just fine, we've all been there and done that. :-D

Heck I've been at this for 4 years with several different cats and I'm still paranoid when someone isn't acting right. As others have said once you have your meter, just being able to test when something feels off is such a wonderful peace of mind. I've even tested myself when I've felt off.

And when in doubt...if you can't test, feed. It is much better to be too high for a few more days than too low for a minute.

We all want our babies well right NOW but until you can test and know they are in a safe range, then an extra snack never hurts. And that goes for mom as well. Chocolate is my go to. ;-) (for me not the cat, she gets tuna  )

First off I want to say just how wonderful I think you all are and feel so good with all of your support...thank you !
Dasher is on 3cc of Lantus twice daily.
Here's another question for all of you, what size lancet do you use ? I know the smaller the number the bigger the tip. What size should I buy ?

Lantus is a U-100 insulin with 100 units per mL.
A milliliter (mL) = a cubic centimeter (cc)

I think you mean he is on 3 units, not 3 cc which would be 300 units.

That is a somewhat high dose starting out; if you have changed the food at the same time as starting insulin, you should drop that down to 1 unit to avoid a hypoglycemic event which could be fatal.

Get 26 to 28 gauge lancets, which may be labeled for alternate site testing.

Your right , it's 3 unites. I to questioned the vet especially since we changed his diet to all wet food but he said 3 unites either way. Is it safe to change the dose without the vets ok? Now I'm really wondering.
Thinking I should call him and tell him I think we should of tried a smaller does.

In my opinion, I would lower the dose. 3 units is high to start with, for any type of insulin. It is best to start low and go slow.

I don't have experience with Lantus but from all the post I have seen it is easy to miss your "right" dosage, so its best to start low if the numbers aren't moving like they should in a few days then you can think about upping it.

You can change the dosage on your own, or if you feel safer talk with your vet as well.

Most of us do it all the time according to the numbers we are seeing and based on our particular insulin's protocol. In fact I have to remind mine who is and who isn't diabetic when we go in because she so seldom sees anything other than their spreadsheets and then only if she happens to look them up for some reason. Love her to death if I have an emergency or for routine care. Just she isn't up to date with Feline Diabetes. So we agree to disagree and just don't discuss it. lol

LOL sounds like my vet, I love her. She's great to my babies but we disagree on Hidey's treatment for diabetes, and now he's in remission :-D
