anyone heard of intermittent pancreatitis? My vet thinks that's what my cat has and maybe isn't a true diabetic. We did check for pancreatitis back in April and it was a very low positive but she did not prescribe meds because it was so low. She said it would clear up. The last week or so she hasn't needed any insulin again. It's like she goes in cycles with needing it.

Both of my cats have been diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis - one by way of ultrasound, the other with the Spec fPL test and response to treatment. If Maddie does have chronic pancreatitis, that can certainly affect her blood glucose numbers, and she may need maintenance medication for it. My most recently diagnosed cat Rain was also just barely above the normal reference range on the Spec fPL test, but initial treatment (Cerenia, Mirtazapine, and Buprenorphrine) combined with a regular regimen of Cerenia as maintenance (currently we're doing 4mg every other day) has done amazing things for her and helped her get off insulin a week after treatment was started. I realize now that Rain's almost certainly had chronic nausea and pain for years and I just didn't know.

Read through the posts on this recent thread for more information on pancreatitis, and I'll tag @Carol & Murphy and @tiffmaxee for them to hopefully give you more advice (both are very experienced with dealing with chronic pancreatitis; I would tag Mogs as well, but I know she was unwell last week).

I'm interested in this too. Seems like the same issue that is going on w/ my cat. How do you treat the pancreatitis?

Squeaker had chronic pancreatitis; key is to recognize the symptoms. For this you'll have to keep a journal for a few weeks and when a SpecfPLI shows pancreatitis------check back through your journal and highlight behavior preceding diagnosis. It got to the point I knew when Squeak was having a flare without the test.
