Pancreatitis

So, Bubber has presumptive pancreatitis. He meets clinical criteria and his blood work has shown no other concerns. Imaging has been deferred, as his vet doesn't find it terribly helpful in diagnosis.

He's still on Flagyl (to treat diarrhea), Lantus (but down to 5 units as he's going hypo a lot), and we've added subQ fluids (150cc daily), zofran 1mg twice daily, bupe for pain, and I'm following him around with low/mod carb food to try and encourage eating, as he's anorexic. We've a call in to discuss steroids, and are picking up an appetite stimulant later today.

Any other suggestions, things we should or could do? I'm torn between thinking he's doing OK and thinking he's fading away in front of me :/
 
Syringe feeding if Bubber will accept it. Otherwise you are doing the right things. Sometimes Cerinia is used together with Zofran (Ondansetron )
 
Thanks, Larry. He will accept syringe feeding, but we're trying to only resort to it if he isn't taking in enough calories on his own. We're heating food, using different dishes, following him around with food, changing the level food is on (it's like a different meal if it's elevated on a box!), using a dozen different varieties of food ... Bubber's brother The Dude had a bout with acute renal failure in 2009 so we are unfortunately well versed in the ways of encouraging cats to eat.

The vet prefers just Cerenia, I would like to try Zofran ... any specific advice about either or the combination?
 
yes, I've read the primer. that is where I made the presumptive diagnosis from, and the vet has gone along with it after encouragement.
 
I hope Bubber gets well soon. My boy, Dimitri, is still getting over his bout of pancreatitis. I ended up having to syringe feed him for a few days because nothing helped his appetite. He's back to eating on his own; not as much as he used to, but it's better than nothing.

My cat Sheba is just recovering from a bout of pancreatitis at the moment. First day she is eating on her own.
You seem to have Bubber on all the right meds and treatment. I know how you feel wondering if he is getting better or worse:bighug:
Why do you want to use the steroids? Steroids are not good to use with diabetics unless you have no choice.
What do other people think about this??.

Is Bubbers eating for you? It is hard the first few days to get them to eat a lot. Just persevere and offer a little bit of food often.
Have you tried mashed pumpkin for the diarrhoea? That is good for diarrhoea. But he might not eat it at the moment with lack of appetite. Not sure where you live but in the US you can buy canned pumpkin...not the pie pumpkin but canned pumpkin with nothing else added. I cook pumpkin and mash it up and freeze and use when necessary for Sheba.

Do you have an SS. I can't see one? It would be really helpful if you could set up an SS when Bubbers is better and people can help you with getting the correct dose of insulin so he doesn't keep having hypos. Here is the link

Rather than steroid for inflammation, maybe see if a bit of fish or krill oil will help him out. It is a natural anti-inflammatory.
