Hi all,

Well, my beautiful baby was diagnosed with very early CKD in late. October. Mamma instincts knew there was something else going on. Her symptoms did not coincide with where our test levels were. That said after multiple vet visits and tests- x-rays, and a sonogram have revealed that she has pancreatic cancer that has more than likely already metastasized to the lungs. The biggest symptom I am dealing with is inappetence, and my vet absolutely refuses to prescribe injectable.Onedansetron.

She will, in fact, “make an exception” and get me injectable Cerenia which is Ludacrisly cost prohibitive in comparison. Obviously, we have tried all the other appetite stimulants that aren’t really working well in pill form, cream form, etc.

Am I correct that I do see here people use injectable Onedansetron? My vet keeps saying it’s not approved for animal use yet they sell it on chewy for what looks like $9 a vial?
I am working on another way to get my hands on some. Since my vet is not being cooperative, what can you guys tell me about dosing timing and anything else I might need to know? any and all advice is greatly appreciated.
 
The advantage of any injectable med like ondansatron or Cerenia is if your cat is vomiting, you don't worry about the cat throwing up a pill. Injectable ondansatron will sting, so that may be an issue.

Your vet is correct -- it's not been approved by the FDA for use in cats although it is routinely used. Do a Google search. You could also suggest the vet call Cornell or the nearest vet school and talk to the pharmacy there.

Hi Sienne, I get it but she’s also on Levemir which is not approved for cats. And sorry but screw the FDA. They sell it on chewy for cats so obviously people are using it.
Giving her a pill is not going well and since her appetite is not good I can’t hide it in food.
 
I'm sorry to hear about the pancreatic cancer, I've dealt with in with Neko's buddy.

Regarding the ondansetron, take a look at this paper: 2016 ISFM Consensus Guidelines on the Diagnosis and Management of Feline Chronic Kidney Disease and see table 9 which has recommended dosing for ondansetron. If it's recommended by the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM), now called the iCatCare Veterinary Society, ondansetron injectable is good for your cat. Maybe pass the paper onto your vet.
