pain medication

Other than metacam, is there a pain medication for cats, Also, how long does it take a cat to recover from dental surgery?
 
there are many other options, and they depend on the type/cause of pain. Buprenex is a very good pain med for cats, the only caution is for cats like my Squeak who can't take that class of drug.

My Squeak has had a ton of dentals and has had a good recovery for all but one...have you gone through this yet or is this in anticipation? Pain meds should be given either while the cat is under anaesthesia or right after, and can be given for a few days if needed.
 
Buprenex is the pain medication I received when B.K. had a dental. It is liquid and given by mouth. I was given pre-filled syringes.

When B.K. had his dental, he came home late that same afternoon (early AM surgery) and was fine. I gave him his pain med that night and AM/PMthe following day. After that, he didn't seem to need it (and I was unwilling to climb up his favorite tree to give it to him).
 
If they have to do any extractions, check that they do local anesthetic injections (nerve blocks) pre-extraction to prevent 'wind-up'.

Wind up is when a painful stimulus is experienced (even under anesthesia) and subsequent attempts to treat the pain don't work normally.

Meloxicam (Metacam®)---Possible ALERT---

I was just at my drs office this morning with WISP to discuss her breast cancer and pain medications. This must be confirmed since I could have the incorrect medication however I know veterinarians just received a letter/fax yesterday regarding 'Metacam" and feline use--and like I said I may have the wrong medication in mind. It is my understanding that this pain medication should not be given to felines due to the high risk of liver damage. I will post on the main page and request veterinarian feedback. There has been a lot of discussion about metacam on this site. My vet uses it sparingly with cats, and its been used for 20 years in Europe in felines. The main warning is over repeated use.... I have to use it with my cat Squeak because he can't tolerate opiads...he'll die...

Interesting stuff and thank you very much. Good info to know when the time comes again that Wisp needs pain medication. I will read everything I can and have her evaluated once again by the vet in 6-8 wks or sooner if needed and go from there. Today her health report was top notch! yipeee!
 
Thanks everyone for your input. My vet also told me that they got a letter saying not to use Metacam for cats. Mr. B has taken Metacam for pain in the past. How would I know if he's been hurt by it? Mr. B had 5 more teeth extracted (bottom molars). He gave me Tramadol (sp?) Anyone have experience with that? We're hoping that this cures the stomatitis or at least helps.

I would not worry about past use of Metacam. There is nothing you can do about it. Tramadol is a cheap, synthetic, opioid-type pain med. Too high a does makes a cat act spacey. Also, it makes many cats foam at the mouth right after administration. I am told it tastes terrible. If you have the pills/tablets/caplets, the standard does is 1/4 of a 50 mg tablet.
