Hi dmc, glad you made it here! What would you like us to call you? Tell us about Ozzy. Are you home testing his glucose? What are you feeding, and what insulin and dose is he on? The link Lucy gave you is a great one for CRF kitties.

Ozzy was diagnosed with the diabetes on August 9th, and we return to the vet so he can be monitored for the day on Friday. He eats Hills kd feline (but now no free feeding). Breakfast is ok and I am able to give his insulin but like tonight he ate sporadically but not enough at one time for the insulin. This I will be asking the vet about on Friday. He is on the ProZinc, 2 units 12 hours apart. But because of the evening meal he has not had a full dose since Sat. I am so upset and hope I can do what is best for him.

We highly recommend that you learn to home test Ozzy's glucose. It's the best way to see how well the insulin is working. It's really easy to do, and we'll be glad to help you learn. All you need is a human glucometer, test strips and lancets to prick his ear. My cat meets me every AM at our testing spot waiting for his test. Here's a link to get you started

Have you tried a different food? Some cats don't like the prescription diets. A good food for cats with diabetes and CRF is Wellness grain free turkey. It is low carb and low phosphorus. I feed it to my cat and add extra water to help keep him hydrated.

I give him 1/4 cup kd feline with about an ounce of canned...he eats good in the morning and gets the insulin. I give him some chicken during the day. Then in the evening, about 6, I try the same food...right now I am trying different canned foods. But he is not eating all of it at one time....it is a little here and a little there. So, it is too spread out to give the insulin. Right? These are the things I will discuss with the vet Friday. He likes the kd feline, but not the kd canned, so I am feeding Fancy Feast....but still he doesn't want it all at once.

Is that his normal feeding pattern, or does he act like he feels bad in the evening? Please consider the home testing. Knowing what his glucose is before you give his shot is the best way to keep Ozzy safe and know how well the ProZinc is working. Fancy Feast is a good, low carb food, but it is high in phosphorus, not so good for kidney problems. Check out the Wellness I mentioned above(you can get it at Tractor Supply, Petsmart...). If he doesn't like that, there are other low carb, low Phos foods. Also, try some tuna juice poured over his food to entice him.

Ozzy had a good meal yesterday and gave full 2 units of Prozinc. I gave him 1/4 cup kd feline dry, mixed with 1 tablespoon of a Delectable liquid treat and warm water. He ate it all! This morning was the same. Only problem I felt wet hair this morning, so I am not sure all insulin got in. I did not reinject. I will feed same thing this afternoon. Only food I leave out is any leftover in his bowl or a tablespoon of chicken. I feel awful leaving the house but I can't just sit here and stare at him. Anyone else feel like that???

I think we all feel that way! Glad he's eating. I really recommend that you learn to home test Ozzy's glucose. It easy to do and we'll be glad to help you learn. It's the best way to keep Ozzy safe and see how well the insulin is working.

I return to the vet tomorrow and home testing is on my list for discussion. Thanks for the insight, it helps not to be alone!!

Home testing was the only way I got any sleep. When you test, you know whether to give the insulin or not and how much. It made a big difference in peace of mind.

Thank You , Debbie. I visit the vet today and will get more info on my home treatment. This is a lot to process!

Ozzy came home from the vet today, ate a little, got his 2 units of Prozinc but now seems a little restless....I am so upset by all of this, I am hoping for a better day tomorrow.

actually I have one, the vet said nothing about it. I want to wait until he seems better to do that. Vet tested him 3x today....he seems a little down tonite. I am so stressed....but plan to do what I can and be peaceful about it all. thanks

Ozzy, my newly diagnosed 14 yr old, came home from vet Friday afternoon. He did not feel that great. However, by Sat. morn after getting back on schedule for food/insulin he has perked up a bit. He has eaten every 12 hours and gotten the prescribed 2 units of Prozinc.
My new concern is that he has never stayed at the vet over night and I have 2 trips planned. 4 days in October and 8 days in Dec., everyone says the safest place is at the vet. I agree, but I am so scared he will be depressed there. At least someone will be there 12 hours a day! Any thoughts? That is the best, right?

I've not had to leave Colin since he was diagnosed. Some here board their cats, others hire a pet sitter to come test and shoot the insulin. Often the dose is lowered to help kitty safe while you're gone. You can start a thread and ask to get more ideas and insight as to which would work better for you.
