well... Ozzie had a bout with diahrrea last week. I had fed him some wellness during the episode last week, so after I stopped that and just gave fancy feast, a few days later he was fine.

He has diahrrea again :( saw some loose stools in the box, and just saw him go 15 mins ago. He also just went into the box and cried and nothing came out.

I fed some FF chunky this week, which they loved it's pate with some chunky pieces in it. Seeing how he's been eating other kinds of FF for a while now, not sure if the food is causing it.

His bg numbers have gone up a little over the past week... about 100 now.

Thinking maybe a vet trip is in order. Is it ok to wait till tomorrow??? The crying is unusual. The reg vet won't be able to do any diagnostics outside of taking blood work. There's an ER vet, but it would be expensive to bring him tonight.

Not sure if this is related to his diabetes or not, but I don't want to get squeezed at the vets. Is there anything I should ask about when I am there?

Are there any foods good for diabetic cats with sensitive stomachs?

As long as he's not dehydrated, and you don't see blood in the stool, he can wait till tomorrow I think.
Do you know the carb value for the chunky FF? Just wondering it it could be causing higher BG... or he could have some sort of digestive system bug that is causing a higher level.
Bob is so "regular" he could do tv commercials for Geritol so I'm not very helpful on diarrhea issues

As far as the crying... he's most llkely having gas pain. Or cramps from the diarrhea

Hi Carl:)

That makes me feel a little better.

The chunky chicken feast according to Janet and Binkys has a carb content of 5, which is only 1 higher than the regular chicken classic I've been feeding.

Looks like the chunky has wheat gluten, not sure if that could be the culprit.

Poor guy.... there's no blood, just very loose lightly colored stool.

My other cat's bathroom habits are fine, so I don't think it's anything contagious.

Good. All good.
I'd still think about the vet tomorrow. Diarrhea can quickly lead to dehydration. Ozzie is doing too well for a setback.

The light color, to me, suggests the possibility of enzyme issues, so I'd encourage you to make the vet visit or at least take in a fecal sample for analysis (for fat content & blood; NOT for parasites, unless he goes outdoors).

If he were having a problem breaking down fats, you might get a light colored, somewhat greasy stool.

Hi Vivian, Sorry to hear Oz is having trouble. The food change, pale stool color, gas and/or cramping make me agree with BJM that that taking a fecal sample to the vet for a PCR panel are a good idea. Not the in house vet fecal flotation but the full PCR panel which costs a little more money but is worth it in the long run. When my 2 cats had the symptoms you describe, they tested positive via PCR for clostridium perfringens enterotoxin A. A fancy name for a bacterial overgrowth condition caused by my changing their food too fast. ohmygod_smile

If Oz turns out to have the same thing, antibiotics like Clavamox and Flagyl are the treatments.

Oz went to the vet this afternoon. He was given flagyl and my vet told me feed him a few cans of hills id. I asked if the food was safe for diabetics and he said yes. Ozzie had about a half a can an hour ago. Come to find out the Id has 24g carbs!! Can't believe my vet suggested given that. I tested him about 20 mins after eating and he as at 92. I'll set him again in an hour or so. I'm pretty upset. I hope this doesnt mess up him being otj!

Also Ozzie lost another pound since his last weigh in three weeks ago. The vet didn't seem to concerned but I am wondering if that is normal? Given the food change and all.

Well, the flagyl sounds like it might be the right thing but I don't know about the food. Why did they want you to feed that? I think it would take longer than 20 mins for the food to hit. Do you have any Forti Flora?

You can get the Forti Flora from Amazon, that was the cheapest place I found it but I don't know how quickly they can get it to you without paying a fortune for shipping. I think someone said vets have it also. It's a supplement used for cats with diarrhea but I used it to get one of mine to eat the wet food, they all loved it....like Kitty Krack! I wonder about changing the food suddenly when he already has diarrhea, I always thought that caused diarrhea? Maybe you could just mix it with some of his regular food. Hopefully it won't cause BG to go too high!

While it might be nice to be off the insulin, you know how to monitor his glucose levels and manage his dosing. If you have to feed higher carb in order to manage another condition, and it means going back on some insulin, then that's what you have to do.

Tested Ozzie last night. 20 mins after eating 92. 1 1/2 half after eating 69. This morning he was at 103.

Phew! Looks like we are ok!!! I think I'll err on the side of caution and not give him anymore i/d. I'll def get some fortiflora to try too!

The endless quest to find a good quality food that he and Milo will eat that won't cause tummy issues continues!!!!

Hey Barbara,

How long should I use the FortiFlora for?

I just bought 30 packets on Amazon.

I don't know the answer to that one. I just use it occasionally when Miss Picky won't eat. I tell you what though all of them act like I just got the dry food out when they smell it.

Maybe post over on health using Forti Flora use or something like that for your title. I don't remember who on the board told me about it. Sue, was it you?

I think you can use it whenever you want. It is a probiotic. Here is what Dr. Lisa says about it:

Try a product called FortiFlora. Most cats LOVE FortiFlora and this has recently become my favorite trick. This is a probiotic made by Purina but you are not going to use it for its probiotic properties. You are just going to use it as a flavor enhancer. The base ingredient in FortiFlora is animal digest - the very substance that makes dry food so very enticing to cats. The directions say to use 1 package/day - and you can use this much if you want to - but this amount is not usually necessary. You may only need ~1/4 of a package - or less - with part mixed into the food and part sprinkled on top of the food just as you would use salt and pepper on your own food.

There is a lot in a package. I probably don't even use 1/4 of the package BUT I'm using is as a flavor enhancer. I think since you would be using it for the diarrhea you would need more.
