Donaleen, I've been away for far too long, but I had to stop in and tell you how thrilled I am that your baby doesn't have Acro :-D :-D . I'm also sorry for the Drama you had to endure, but you are surrounded by amazing people who want nothing more than to help you in any way that they can. Having first hand experience at this when Tommy was DX with Acro a couple of years ago, I couldn't have made it without them. They are my extended family and after reading your thread, I miss them so much that I want and need to start posting again and not just come here and read posts.. I wish you all the best with Ozy! You seem like a wonderful Bean to me. Merry Christmas...

Hi Donalee
I am Pattie. First I want to apologize that Harley’s ss is not up to date. This year, life has gotten in the way. I have all the numbers and hopefully update it on vacation. I do understand the feeling that people are being mean when maybe they don’t mean it. When Harley was so sick and high dose, I posted that I was afraid of the high dose and acro and might mean he would die. Someone (not Gayle but another high profile person) said…Well Pattie, every cat dies. I was crushed and cried for days over this. At the time, Harley had DKA, was in ICU and on 8u. His vets tried every insulin they knew. 12u NPH twice a day, Humulin (R) 9u 3 times a day. Nothing seemed to work with him. GF-1 was normal, and they were at a loss of what to do. Finally he came home on 7u lantus. It was from FDMB and the FB group that I learned about IAA. I had requested the test from my vet, but they said they did not feel it was necessary and just keep going the way I was. Well, long story short, I wanted an answer. Told them I would go to a vet that honored my wishes and the test was done. Harley came back at 66%, anything over 24% begin positive. Sorry, I got a little wordy here.

Then I learned how to deal with the IAA. I have had to aggressive with his dose. I might be the few people that will shoot when Harley (in the past) has only been 50. This is something that has taken time. I think to have some articles say that it might end in a month to a year is not correct. It has actually take n me about 1.5-2 years to get him down. I have successfully taken Harley from 10.75u twice a day to 1.25u as of today. I also, within the last 2 months, adopted another IAA kitty Melody. She is not acro, just IAA. Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you. I am here to help.

Pattie

Photosquirrel, thank you (you must have another name?) That is one fine looking cat. I've always had a soft spot for graybies. We have one now (Harpo) and he is so soft and very beautiful. We call him Handsome Harpo.

Hi, Pattie. Thanks for taking the time to share what you've learned with me. I have shot as low as 57 before BUT not at such a high dose. It worries me to even think about a huge depot PLUS with IAA, there is all that trapped insulin that can be released. It scares me. I do want to be aggressive because that seems like the best way to get ahead of the antibodies before the dose gets astronomical.

I do have one question for the Facebook group.... why Facebook? Why not here? I am not trying to stir things up. I just wondered why Facebook? Once I got a virus that I traced to Facebook that was hard to get rid of and I stopped using Facebook period. And I wasn't doing any of the high-risk Facebook things. Just looking at my friend's pictures and very occasionally posting.

And Gayle, it did annoy me when you sent me a PM and then I couldn't reply because yo don't accept PM's here. That DID annoy me. If you are going to write PM's, you should allow a response.

Donaleen,

Good news. I just received this response from Dr. Lunn:

No - I do not consider that borderline - it is perfectly normal. Cats with acromegaly are generally much higher. I don't really consider them truly positive until they are above 150. Rechecking in a few months makes sense to me, but in the meantime I would not worry about it too much.

Sleep well tonight and stop worrying about it.

There's always a lot for us to learn, isn't there?! :-D
Wow! I'm impressed Dr. Lunn got back to you to offer her opinion so quickly. Thanks for contacting her, Julie!

It sounds to me, while Dr. Lunn is saying an 88 is normal today, retesting for acromegaly in a few months makes sense... as Gayle and I both suggested. This is good information to have from one of the leading experts in this field.

Just something to keep in mind...

I suppose it is always a good idea to test again for such things. I will go with negative for today. Right now it's one day at a time. These days I am more concerned about the lack of the 5P's unless I give him bupe. What hurts?

And Gayle, as to Facebook. Some time ago my virus protection software started refusing to let me use any of my browsers because it said there was a virus but it couldn't get rid of the virus. Since I couldn't open a browser, it was difficult to get any help and very frustrating. I had to do my research on another computer, including downloading software to clean it up. Eventually I got rid of the problem virus and identified the problematic files. I searched the internet for what those files WERE. And the answer was Facebook spyware. You might call it Adware but because it brought my virus protection to its knees and was so hard to get rid of, I call it a virus. I hate wasting my time getting rid of of viruses. I try to be careful and avoid that. I never went back to Facebook.

Great discussion and information.

BTW, donaleen, Photosquirrel is Lauren :-D She is most awesome and wonderful as is her handsome Tommy. :-D :-D :-D :-D

The italics are mine.

Yes, I know that Dr. Lunn seems to claim that 120 would not be acro, but she's dead wrong....
I would take Shadoe's results as a tentative positive given where the cut-off falls and it would seem based on the remainder of Dr. Lunn's statement that Shadoe should have been re-tested a few months later.

What I take issue with is that I just don't know when Gayle has had time to get her degree in veterinary medicine. While most of us don't know each other's occupations, I don't believe that Gayle is a vet or works in any related area in the field. Neither do I. However, Dr. Lunn's academic pedigree includes a degree in veterinary medicine and she is a clinical scientist doing research and treatment in the area of feline acromegaly. It seems a more than a bit presumptuous if not down right disrespectful to make a general statement that Dr. Lunn is "dead wrong." No one is right 100% of the time. If Gayle had rightly stated that her experience with Shadoe was that the cut-off of 120 on testing was consistent with her experience, I would have no argument. But to call a respected scientist "dead wrong" is excessive especially when there others who may be reading this thread and ultimately considering turning to Dr. Lunn for treatment of their cats. Gayle is certainly entitled to her opinion but it's just that -- one person's opinion.

all right, that's enough!

in case i wasn't clear in my post above: STOP IT!

there's been entirely too many snarky comments on this thread already... some obvious and some subtle. remove chips from ALL shoulders.
if anyone has something to say... make it positive and helpful or don't say it.

As Marje said, "Great discussion and information." I agree.

LAST WARNING: Leave the personal digs (including those which are subtle and/or sarcastic) out of it or this thread will be closed... something which is NOT in the best interest of this group. Find a way to express your thoughts without cutting remarks. You want to argue with me about it? Contact me by PM. Keep it out of what could be considered an informative thread.

In other words, play nicely or don't play at all.

Donaleen,
Try to filter out the "noise" and see the good information you received in this condo.

Merry Christmas,
Carl

You are right, Carl. And I do need help. I feel bad that some of my most trusted advisors got yelled at in my condo. Maybe I got yelled at, too. Anyway, too much yelling.

And Merry Christmas to you, from my paradise to yours.
