I'm in panic mode right now. I gave him ondansetron about 2 hours ago for nausea. I have 4 mg tablets, dose is for 1/4 of a tablet.
I gave him a whole tablet by mistake. I missed cutting one of them into quarters. I also gave him some bupe shortly after that. Do I need to take him to an emergency vet? It's all my fault. I've not been getting very much sleep with everything going on with him.

I don't know, but if I were you I'd just skip the middleman and call a vet to ask. They will of course say to bring him in to get checked out, but you might get some info from them over the phone about the possible implications of an extra-large dose.

Good luck!

Lisa, so his regular dose is 1mg? Was doing some quick :bookworm: online and says (for people) overdose can occur if you take 10x the prescribed dose. See if ER vet can inform you over the phone, and or try Poison control center. How is Smoky acting?

I would have to take him to an emergency vet which is a small fortune. The regular vet offices are closed.
If you call, they should be able to tell you if your cat needs to come in.

It's only money......you can get more.....(that's what I remind myself of)

I don't think you have much choice. I did a quick google search. All I could come up with were some scary results for an overdose in humans. However, dogs and cats don't seem to experience the same side effects from ondansetron that humans experience, but in a case like this talking to a vet/ER is the way to go.

I called the emergency vet who said Smoky should be OK. She said to keep an eye on him just in case. If he starts acting strange or starts vomiting to bring him in

He seems a bit sleepy but got up to eat some food. The emergency vet said to watch him for a few hours.

Found this on Tanya's site (http://www.felinecrf.org/nausea_vomiting_stomach_acid.htm#ondansetron):

Ondansetron Dosages

Ondansetron comes in 4mg pills, and a commonly used dose on Tanya's Support Group is 1 mg each day, so one pill contains four doses.

This seems to work well for many CKD cats; however, Pet Place mentions that the usual dose for cats is 0.11mg per pound bodyweight every 8-12 hours, i.e. 1.1mg for a 10 lb (4.5kg) cat given 2-3 times a day. Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook mentions an empiric dose of 0.5mg per kg bodyweight twice daily, so a10 lb (4.5kg) cat would be given 2.25mg twice a day.
(emphasis: mine)

Smokys vet gave prescription for 1 mg every 8 to 12 hours. I just gave him a little over a days dosage. ER vet said not to give anymore for another 24 hours.

I just figured if a 10 lb (4.5kg) cat would be given 2.25mg twice a day, your guy will probably be okay with what you gave him. How is he doing now?

Smoky has nearly recovered from his accidental high dose of ondansetron yesterday. He just wants to eat and go back to sleep right now. I think that is from the lymphoma making him feel really crappy. The vet said to wait until tonight if I can before giving him any meds for nausea/vomiting.

For info the vet in the Yahoo Feline lymphoma said yesterday that "2 to 3 or even 4 mg would be appropriate for a larger cat 2-3 times daily"
