OTJ Protocol

Well, after nearly two years of twice daily shots, testing and many a tear. Dainty is without insulin. It has been five days now of numbers under 100. I thought perhaps my meter had gone awry but after control testing it, it appears to still be working. This has actually brought up more questions. What do I do now? I've gotten so used to the idea of forever following the prescribed routine I'm not sure what happens next. How long will this last? Is there anything new I need to do? Should I still test daily? If she goes back to being diabetic, will it be a gradual rise in numbers or a sudden surge? i feel like I should be sighing in relief but I actually feel more anxious now. Isn't life funny? Back when she was diagnosed in 2010. I would have done anything for "normal" numbers, now I'm worried its the calm before the storm or some other silly notion. I guess I just got used to the regularity/predictability of it all.

First off! This is good news and a reason to celebrate!

Second, keep testing, we typically do an OTJ trial for 14 days. And after 14 days, if the numbers stay in normal range, then we say the cat is officially OTJ!. So, you have 9 days left to go. As far as testing during this time, do the pre-shot time tests and if you want to get a couple spot checks in, go for it.

After OTJ, maybe test once a day for a couple weeks, then once a week, then once a month, then whenever you feel like it or notice something off.

Awesome news!

And after two years... it might take that long for Sneakers the way she is going  .

You give me hope.

14 day eh? Alright we can do that. I am happy that her body isn't facing the daily stress of high numbers. Even if this only lasts for a little bit. It sure would be nice though if she were to remain without insulin.

And the general range should be 40-120 without insulin, with the majority of the time in double digits.

Your story will be an inspiration to all those beans slogging along with regulated numbers but not OTJ numbers. Be sure to post on the 14th day. We love OTJ parties!

I believe you are officially in remission! Congratulations! You can now relax!

Regarding how long will it last. Well, hopefully, the rest of her life. As long as you stay aware of her behavior, eating, drinking and peeing habits, you will know when and if there is a need for concern. Also, don't let just one test think she's out of remission. Lots of things can happen that can elevate the BG's temporarily. Of course, if it stays above 120 then you may have reason for concern.

But for now, today is a day to celebrate!

Happy OTJ DAY!
