My kitty Xalli has been OTJ for over a month now, which is great. Her diet is exclusively wet, almost all 3% carbs or lower, mostly EVO so almost no carbs. Well she just managed to climb up into a cabinet where I have a store of food for a different kitty who hasn't been eating, and eat through a bag to eat some dry food! It was probably about a 1/4 c or so total.

What can or should I expect after this, and how should I respond? If her bg #'s go up, when would that likely happen? And if they do is this something I need to respond to with insulin? Or do I wait it out? I know I don't have any actual bg information to give yet, so am basically seeking anyone with a similar experience who came through it OK or any advice at all! Please let me know if you have any suggestions! I want to be prepared to respond in the way that will help her get through this in whatever way is best for her long term health. Thanks so much.

There are no set rules for such situations, as there is no way to know a. how much bgs will rise and b. how quickly things will go back to normal. Perhaps others who have had similar experiences can let you know what happened with their cats...

My suggestion? Test a few times today and see where she goes. If all goes well, her bgs will go back to normal within the day as the food clears her system. If, however, bgs are elevated for a day or two then you MAY need to consider a tiny bit of insulin....

Meanwhile, breathe, and get the dry food stored in something less easy for her to get into :)
