My cat was otj for over 1 year and was doing fine. I took to a new vet a few weeks ago and she prescribed him novifit for his senility, said he has a slight heart murmur and beginning stages of renal failure.. Last night he was sleeping with me and it smelled like he threw up but there was no throw up. He was drinking this morning, at about 1/4 can of fancy feast small can with some treats. Then he seemed weak this evening and wouldn't sit down the whole way, sitting on his full foot. I tested his blood sugar and it was 165... He appears dehydrated. He ate a 1/2 teaspoon of baby food but really isn't drinking water. We are buying some tuna hoping he will drink the juice... Any ideas of what this is? Dka?? If so this came out of nowhere?!?... My other cat that passed from ska and fatty liver did not have the breath smell... I'll likely take him to the vet tomorrow but wanted to see if any had any thoughts on what this is..?

Wish I had a good idea. You can syringe water if he is dehydrated. I would not think DKA with a 165.

I am sorry it is so slow tonight when you would like some ideas fast.

Thanks for the response. He drank some tuna juice but didn't drink it all... He seems really tired. I'll see how he's doing in the morning. He is 18 years old and the only thing new he's been getting is the novifit pill inside a pill pocket... Just not sure what caused this so suddenly. We did go out of town one night abt 2 weeks ago a left lower carb dry food out...

My other cat died from dka and fatty liver so I'm extra paranoid...

my first thought is the kidneys. can you have him checked by a vet right away, in the morning at the latest, to see if his kidneys are giving out?

as far as the novifit, i've never heard of it so i googled it and found this, which sounds like it's SAMe basically which has no known side effects according to this link so i wouldn't think it was being caused by that

(edited to change "wasn't" to "was". can't type anymore it seems)

I was going to suggest potassium loss also. Newly dx FD and Kidney cats can be prone to potassium loss. Actually any time a kitty is drinking more water and peeing more there is the potential for potassium loss. I highly suggest you get your kitty to the vet today and run bloodwork.

I would say a vet trip is in order as well. One thing I do want to add is that Fancy Feast is high in phosphorus--if your cat will take to a higher quality (human grade), lower phosphorus food it will help manage the kidney problems. I know cats in renal failure can get picky with food, so if switching food isn't an option you may need a phosphorus binder. Priority number one is making sure your cat eats.

Some suggestions for lower phosphorus foods are : Merrick's Before Grain Turkey, Merrick's Before Grain Beef, Wellness Turkey, Evo 95% Chicken & Turkey. Here's a link to an updated cat food chart--ideally you want phosphorus to be under 250 mg per 100 kcal.

Edited to add link that I forgot: https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B8...MzhkYTkxOGM4NThk&sort=name&layout=list&num=50

Good news, it appears he had an infected ruptured anal gland. They think that the infection and fever made him stop eating and drinking. They gave him some fluids also just to make sure he was hydrated. He came home and ate almost 1/2 can of food. I'll need to just monitor the rupture site to made sure no infection returns. They said if he did not start eating again in the next day or two they'd rerun the bloodwork but were holding off since we just had bloodwork 2 weeks ago.

Thanks for all the responses... He didn't show any signs of this and I wouldn't have guessed it was a possibility..

wow! that never even crossed my mind and i've had a kitty with one of those. explains the not sitting down all the way though that's for sure. OOOOWWWWWWWW!!

glad to hear it wasn't anything worse cause yeah i think i'd take an anal gland problem over kidneys or dka or electrolytes, etc.....
