OT vaccination study

Wow, this is really shocking. On a related note: when we lived in Florida, state law required dogs and cats to be vaccinated for rabies every year, although the vaccine was effective for at least two years and was labeled so. Our vet, bless him, refused to vaccinate more often than every two years and simply filed the paperwork with the state verifying that the animals seen at his practice were protected. He told me a lot about vaccines and their dangers and side effects. In our town in Iowa, we are required to license dogs and cats annually, and the license application requires proof of rabies vaccination. (Both Maggie and Star were adopted from the animal shelter and had to have licensing papers from the very beginning, so unless I report to the city that they are deceased, I'm stuck in this vaccination/licensing scam.) I have argued that my cats live indoors and are not exposed to other animals, but it doesn't matter to the city. The next time I move, I'm just going to keep quiet about my pets and make my own choices about their care. Thank you for sharing this article, Rhiannon!
 
I quit vaccinating 2 years ago, after I found out the dangers and longevity of vaccines. All three of my kits are indoor-only. The dog still gets her rabies shots because she goes outside to potty.
 
I'm like you, Kat. In NJ, we're required to vaccinate for rabies every 3 years, but magically, the feline rabies vaccine is supposedly on good for one year, so the rabies certificate is also only good for one year, too. That infuriates me, since - as Kat said - these vaccines really last much, much longer. Years ago, I recall reading some study or other that shows the vaccine is actually good for at least 7 years.

Vaccines serve a very important purpose, but too much of a good thing is NEVER a good thing.

I used to give my pets their vaccines every new year's eve; call it tradition! And gosh did I save a lot of money vaccinating 3 cats and 1 dog myself!!! I forgot to do that in 2011 then learned the danger of vaccinations thereafter. So since then, the cats haven't got their vaccines nor the dog. The last time I vaccinated them for rabies was in 2009 (I actually was able to buy it online from a reputable website), so therefore, the way I read it, the dog will not need another rabies vaccine until 2016 and giving my cats the rabies vaccine would serve no purpose...
 
We never gave the rabies shot to my GA's, and when it was time for my oldest cat to pass, she put up a fight and bit the technician .. I didn't know it at the time, but later on they called Peter to tell him because of the bite and because they had no record (nor did we) about her being up to date on rabies vaccines, she would have to be tested for that .. When he asked what that would mean, we were horrified .. Even though she was already gone, the idea of them treating her that way made me sick to my stomach .. We told them she didn't have rabies, she was indoors only for 16+ years .. they said it didn't matter, they had to test for her in case a bat ever came in the house and bit her .. sigh .. it was a bad way to end an already bad experience ..

So we have decided to vaccinate our girls' against rabies .. We just got mocha her shot last year .. we used the purevax(?) vaccine ..
