Sorry for the off topic - but I am grappling with a decsion. Some of you may remember that we have in the past sailed with Tuscany (GA) and Merlot (GA). They mostly did ok - well minus the times that Tuscany fell off the boat and the one time the weather was so bad we made them seasick.....

So fast forward - we have Josie -who has been with us for 4 yrs now (trapped feral age 14 weeks - inside since). She had traveled with us up north to a cottage and has done fine. Some of you may remember we took her for her first boat trip the day after we pts Tuscany last Labor Day. Josie didn't do so great - no poop, hardly any pee, not eating. I ended up taking her to the vet's 2 days after we got back and they did subq's on her to hydrate.

More fast forward -we decided to try Josie again. Took her the 4th of July. She did pee.poop on the Friday pm. Peed every day - no poop til home and probably Wednesday. But ate at least a little every day.
Took her again last weekend. Much more comfortable on the boat - no hiding, coming on dock at nigh, sitting out with us. Eating a bit more, drank some. Peed every day - no poop. When we went out to saIl I did find her below on bed panting - I brought her up to an area where there was a breeze and she did fine. I did have to take her to work with me on Monday for the entire day. She hid under the couch - the entire day. Luckily that am she had a bit to eat.

This weekend - we are trying her again. She will have to come to work with me again on Monday.

All this in anticipation of a 2 week trip coming up starting July 30.

I know taking her with us is 99.9 % for our pleasure. I know that she isn't keen (yet) on the boat thing. I have concerns about the decreased eating - and definately the decrease poop ( I don't think she goes every day anyways). We are actually thinking about taking some sub q fluids with us - just in case (Lactated ringers).

SO - I know we are crazy cat peeps around here but is this insane? Is enough enough and leave the poor cat home?? Am I being too selfish in this? Grappling with my decision.......

Re: OT - kittie "torture"

I have absolutely no advice other than if you're taking her along for a 2 week trip, I ring LRS and Miralax. Will she be happier with you on the boat or without you at home?

Re: OT - kittie "torture"

Anti nausea medication (ondansetron), stomach acid meds - pepcid AC, syringes if you need to assist feed, mirilax. Feliway diffuser/spray. Rescue Remedy.

Re: OT - kittie "torture"

did anyone see the video of the cat playing with and touching dolphins? A couple of times the cat almost fell in, but he kept his balance and those dolphins were loving the interaction.

Re: OT - kittie "torture"

i wonder if she's having any nausea? only because i'm a carsick type of person and the idea of spending days on a boat . . . would you be able to tell if she were nauseous? if you don't think she's getting motion sick, then i would also think eventually she'll get used to it. if she's getting sick it would be kinder to leave her at home. at least that's what i would want.

that video of the cat with the dolphins was awesome. so incredibly cute.

Re: OT - kittie "torture"

I was wondering the same thing as Julie (because I am also a motion sickness person). One of my cats gets carsick, and I run into it occasionally when I do transports for rescue too. Have you noticed her feeling icky in the car ever?

The other thought is that most cats are *never* happy in a new place until they get used to it, so if she isn't sick then it might be just that she is scared because it's some place new.

Would it be possible to have her spend more time on the boat at the dock to get used to it?

And I couldn't resist this…

Re: OT - kittie "torture" -Josie swims

Beat the beans--last pm Josie decided to try getting off the boat and missed the dock! Cat overboard in the dark! Luckily we actually had the net out already- unluckily I had not harnessed Josie . It isn't as easy to net a swimming cat as you would think. DH had her in the net several times and she kept trying to swim. Finally he heaves her up and onto dock with enough momentum that she went back in the water on the other side of dock. Catapult has new meaning. We did better the 2nd time. Gently , slowly bringing up net. Our poor kitty was wet like she has never been and as I am wiping her down starting to get pissed off! Grumbled all the while. So very scary as it was going on, some good lessons learned by beans - and hopefully cat. I never knew they could swim so well!

So Natalies link had some good info that we are now going to implement . Thanks everyone else for thoughts. I'll add the pepcid to her kit.

On the plus side- josie's coat is very soft today....

Re: OT - kittie "torture" -Josie swims

OMG... I held my breath the whole time I was reading that.... and then burst out laughing at your last comment... sorry. But it was a mixture of relief and comedy. Whew!

So glad everyone is ok and Josie's coat is so soft today.

Best of luck for the next adventures at sea. I can't wait to hear more!

Re: OT - kittie "torture" -Josie swims

I'd probably first be embarrassed that I missed the dock (and we all know how much cats like embarrassing themselves) and then to be dunked again? No wonder Josie was pissed off.

(I wonder what she's going to do to retaliate?)

Re: OT - kittie "torture" -Josie going sailing 2 weeks

Ok, wish us luck! We leave in an hour or so. Will be going straight thru overnight for about 22 hrs. Probably motor most of it. I have feliway going, pepcid on board, morales ( how much to use? Daily?) have squids in case. Also now a nice thick braided rope to help her climb on board. I did try a lifejacket- it was too small and they didn't have larger. Wish us luck!!

Can't wait to hear some adventures of Josie the Sailing Kitty! Take lots of photos for us.
Have a wonderful time!

Re: OT - kittie "torture" -Josie going sailing 2 weeks

So far we have kept Josie on the dry side of the boat ! She is eating some, though I now have 3 types fuds open in fridge trying to tempt her. She has an open cabinet in our birth that she likes to sleep in . It keeps her safe especially when we are under way. Not too many visits to the cock pit area- maybe she remembers her swimming lesson. She is eating some drinking some. One pee a day , maybe a poop every 2-3 days. I did drag the miralax out tonight but no squids yet.
Only funny story so far- we have her litter box in the forward head. I guess I didn't have it centered just so for as when she went to use litter box yesterday her weight turned on the floor mounted shower sump pump. DH went to investigate and there was poor Josie frozen in box with quizzical look on face looking at bottom of box. Needless to say it was urine interruptus for that moment.

Celi - good pics as usual. Peg leg cat very apprapro for us as 1st cat merlot was tripod when we Pts- cancer on leg and Tuscany had the large Timor on her front leg as well . We often joke that we r doomed with cats and legs..,.

FYI - now in Macgregor Bay- Ontario . Hugs to all LL/sugar cats!

Re: OT - kittie "torture" -Josie going sailing 2 weeks

OK, Joyce. You're going to have to work on boat based spelling!!

Thanks for the update on Josie.

Re: OT - kittie "torture" -Josie going sailing 2 weeks -home

Ah, the sigh was visable - if not audible as we turned into our sub. Josie knew she was coming home. She survived the two weeks on the boat - I am sure that she must feel a little funny having all this space to shoot around in now - rather than the confines of the boat. I wonder if she feels like she is still rocking as DH and I do.
Back to work for the beans in am :(
Hope to visit more condos in near future.

Re: OT - kittie "torture" -Josie going sailing 2 weeks -home

I'm glad to hear you're all back on dry land and none the worse for wear. We'll have to see what Josie has in store for you and DH.

Re: OT - kittie "torture" -Josie going sailing 2 weeks -home

Glad to hear you all made it back home safe and sound, and dry!
