Midgie, our civvie, is a medium hair tabby. She's a scrawny thing, maybe 5-6 lbs tops. She BARELY tolerates grooming, only likes petting on her terms and absolutely hates to be held. Clipping her nails is a fight, too.
This morning I find she's a bit of a mess on her bum and is in need of a clean up. I don't even know how much poop is back there because she won't let me look at it. I haven't been successful in wrapping her in a towel to try that way.

My question is, is there anything over the counter that I can get that might calm her down enough so I can see the situation back there? I don't want to hurt her and she fights like the dickens when I try, twisting, whining, growling and huffing.(she's never once put her teeth on me).

(cross post from Health)

I have heard of Rescue Remedy. I'm pretty sure I can get it at Whole Foods. How much would I give her?

The vet would have to sedate her and I do not want to do that.

Right now, she's cowering in a corner and shrinks away from me when I try to pet her or even give her treats.

Henry went to the vet a few weeks back and they shaved his bum area for me. Long hair cats are so difficult to clean even if they are cooperative.

I think you need the pet formula. The human formula contains alcohol. You might post on Health asking the question, though. I have RR in the house but I've not used it.

I'm going to head to Whole Foods and see if they have the pet formula. If not, I know of another place that opens in a few hours that would probably have it.

Based on her aroma right now, sooner is better than later. She's a stinky girl.

Back from Whole Foods and they did have the pet formula. The husband woke up so he helped hold her and we did get a good bit cleaned up before she threw a complete squealing fit. I gave her a little more Rescue Remedy and we're going to take a break and try again in a bit. It does seemed to have helped. Either that or it was the husband's zen-like presence.

I do have a couple of decent scratches across my chest that make me look pretty tough! ;-)

Thanks for the recommendation Sienne!

Try rubbing a drop on her ears too, it can be absorbed transdermally. The other thing to try is a Feliway diffuser. You can get it at most pet store, but much cheaper online. It comes in a spray too.

The first time I put some on one of her favorite treats. It didn't soak all the way in, though. She started to chew it and then stopped cold and spit it out. Then gave me the stinkeye.
The second time I rubbed some on her ear.

It did seem to work both times, though, at least to an extent. After round two she mostly clean. I think she must have gotten into Ru's miralax dosed food the other night, even though I thought I kept a close enough eye on her while they were eating.
