Hi All;
My name is Megan, and my sweet boy Oren, roughly 11-12yr. orange creamsicle kitty was just diagnosed about 2 wks. ago. I am afraid I pissed a way a week being confused by the vets information dump and didn't get him started on insulin until this past Mon. However, in that first week, I moved him from a dry food (with occasional wet as a treat) to Fancy Feast classics completely. They also sent me home with Purina DM dry food, but i read that is still way too high in carbs, and have only been using it as 'snacks' or a very occasional treat. He started on Lantus, 1 unit 2x a day after a day of curve at the vets. Since then I have been reading A LOT and coming to look through this forum... and feel I have learned a lot, but obviously have much more to go. I haven't begun home testing, though today i did purchase a Relion Confirm meter and some test strips/lancets. My first thought is should I have gone w/ the Relion micro, which got a better score at Consumer Reports... ?

It's great that have found us. I live in the uk and so ended up with a completely different meter. I tend to think that just get used to the equipment that you are using.
Have you read the link on ear testing? The thing that helped me to most was using lots of low carb treats and heating the ear with a rice sock beforehand. The first time is really daunting but it is best to just get yourself prepared and then to go for it.

Out if interest was the curve done before or after you had changed to low carb? Is he allowed to free feed?

I would be really helpful if you could pop the lantus and food info into your signature.
 
Thanks phlika29! still learning the ropes obviously! Yes, I've read extensively on the ear testing and am hopeful. Oren is a very laid back, loving guy and I've already begun the 'fondling the ear a lot', practice pokes w/ finger tip etc. just to get him used to being handled. Curve was done after switch to food, which was just about 1 wk. He went cold turkey mostly, since he LOVES wet food and didn't have any tummy upset or vomiting. Not free feeding, eating in a.m and p.m as he always had, though before it was dry food.
 
Welcome from the mama of another laid-back 11.5-year-old loverboy! Believe me, that personality type comes in handy once you start home-testing. :) Sounds like you're on exactly the path Henry and I took. We started him on Lantus a week after Dx as well, and during that week we switched him over to all FF Classics (which he also took to easily since he will eat anything put in front of him with great enthusiasm). In Henry's case, his blood sugar after that week was already down 100 points from the diet change alone, so definitely don't consider that week pissed away! Hope you will continue posting as you get your bearings a bit more. It's a steep learning curve but quickly becomes the new normal.
 
So, I do have some more questions and I'm assuming this isn't the right thread to go into more detail.. Do I just start a new thread in the Main health forum?

Yep, you can post there or in the Lantus/Levemir forum. I started in the former when I had more general questions and migrated to the latter once I was home testing regularly and needed feedback on Henry's progress and dosing advice. Either place is fine and full of knowledgeable people who can help!
 
The WalMart ReliOn Confirm and Confirm Micro are 2 packagings of the same meter. If you have issues holding small things, the regular one may be easier to handle.
