I'm looking to switch from Vetsulin to just about anything else at this point. Vet is not much help, and will be some time before I can get to a new one.

I'm going to give it a few more days to be safe, since we just went fully low carb and I messed with the dose.

But based on SS, is there a particular insulin you guys would recommend? Cost isn't a huge factor, but does matter. Due to our schedule, I like the 1-hour leeway Vetsulin affords. I'm also not able to test like crazy, most days I'll be lucky to get a +2 and another midcycle.

If you need more shot flexibility then ProZinc might be a good choice. It's also an in and out insulin and usually lasts a little longer.

The two insulins that are recommended by the American Animal Hospital Assn for FD are Prozinc and Lantus. Lantus is pricey but most people buy it from Canada (Marks Marine Pharmacy in Vancouver) where it's about 1/4 to 1/3 the price you'd pay in the US. It's a very different type of insulin than you're used to -- it's a depot type of insulin which gives it a long duration and is fairly gentle. Prozinc has the longest duration of the non-depot types of insulin.

You might want to read some of the sticky notes at the top of both the Prozinc and Lantus/Basaglar/Levemir forums. They will give you an idea of how the insulins work.
