I went looking for a low carb cat treat, but the two brands in the supermarket both had cereals in them and looked dubious.
In the dog section, I found “JerHigh” Vitapet, Chicken Sampler for Dogs.

Ingredients: Chicken meat, water, glycerine, sucrose, flavours, preservatives, antioxidants, colourings.
Guaranteed analysis (is all they have): Minimum average per 100g: Crude Protein 24%, Moisture 20%, Crude Fat 9%, Ash (for digestion) 6%

Guaranteed analysis is also dubious I know, but it’s all they have.
I thought maybe it looks alright (question mark over the sucrose)
But then in the small print it says “We do not recommend feeding to cats”.

Why is that? Does this look alright as a test treat for Ak?

Hmm, not sure what that warning is referring to.

I give either freeze dried liver bits (Ranch Rewards brand) or Zukes Natural Purrs to my cats. The Zukes have rice in them but otherwise seems to be excellent.

Sucrose is another name for sugar so I would not feed this treat at all to a diabetic cat. The warning may be because a cat may choke on the jerky-like texture of the treat.

Stick with 100% freeze dried meat treats or any of the popular low carb treats listed here http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=9172 Most pet stores sell freeze dried meat treats. Supermarkets don't generally sell the "healthier" treats.

I agree that it is probably a choking hazard for the jerky. Wellness made some jerky cat treats and Tess got them caught in her throat. Cats tend not to chew much and gulp bits down.

I get the freeze dried chicken in the dog treat section. They have bigger bags and are cheaper. PetSmart has a store brand, Prime Taste Treats, that are a very good value. At Christmas I picked up some Pure Bites, but they were a lot harder. I always cut them up into smaller pieces.

i also use freeze dried chicken or if my mom brings her dehydrator down i make my own dehydrated chicken strips. They go bonkers for those and they are fresh and very healthy. So if you have access to a dehydrator i highly recommend it.

I just got a dehydrator, hoping to make my own treats. If you've got any recipes or tips to share, Angela, I'd sure appreciate you emailing or PMing me.
