My boy, Woodee, who is about 9 years old, and a 5 year fibrosarcoma survivor, has been having problems off and on with urinating. He usually always stands, and urinates straight back in the box, usually in spurts. I had a vet many years ago, tell me that it is not good when a cat pees like that, as it usually may indicate or lead to chronic interstitial cystitis.
I have been giving Woodee small doses of Buprenex for pain when he runs around to the different boxes and squawks like a chicken. Sounds really strange I know, but that is how he sounds.
I took him to the vet's one week after I lost my Ketchie in February, and the vet that saw him that day, said his anal glands were very blocked, so she cleaned them out. He has seemed to be doing better, but I took him back to the vet's this past Saturday, March 23rd, for a recheck, and the vet he saw that day, recommended trying ONSIOR (an NSAID) for 3 days on him, to see if that would help if he has any pain urinating.
This drug, I have looked up on a search on this website, besides reading about it on the insert that came with the drug. I am very leery on using it on him, since he had some protein in his urine in February when the first vet tested him. I do not want to use a drug that is hard on the kidneys, in case he could be going into chronic renal failure. The vet did not think it seemed that he was, but my Ketchie, who just died four weeks ago, had started out like this several years back (with the cystitis problems) and she ended up with severe chronic renal failure.
I have not tried the drug on Woodee, and I just wondered if anyone here has used it much for this sort of thing? I rather just give him Buprenex when he seems to be in distress, and not take a chance with a drug like this, that must be so powerful, that you can only give it for 3 days in a row, and that's IT.
I gave Metacam to both Ketchie years ago, and also my other kidney failure cat, Proto, who blocked and died on August 8, 2009. He was only 5 years old. I will NOT use Metacam ever again, and I somehow feel this drug is not much better or safer.
Any opinions? Am I being too paranoid about trying this drug? I cannot take NSAIDS, myself, and I know that they are not that safe to use all the time in humans.
Thanks!
