Hi Folks-
I rescued Mr. Cat in January 2013, a 13-year-old cuddly male who is a very large cat (13.9 lbs but not overweight). 10 days ago, he was diagnosed as diabetic with a BG of 375 but completely normal bloodwork otherwise. He seems generally happy and healthy, even with diabetes. I took him to the vet due to bleeding gums and when she ran a blood test, BG=375! Due to the bleeding gums, I switched him to all-wet food the day before I took him to the vet, so he was on all-wet food five days before his Lantus began.
He started Lantus at 2.0 units twice per day (this was the vet's recommendation) on July 15, 2013. I only tested once in the past week due to difficulty, plus the vet told me to come back in 7-10 days and she'd run a curve for him. Well, he didn't want to go to the vet yesterday (day 7) for his first insulin curve, so I started home testing.
Due to recommendations on this site about Trader Joe's wet food being high in carbs, I gave him his last TJ wet food yesterday morning and stuck to Natural Choice (NC) low-carb the rest of the day to see if it would influence his BG.
Today, he began at 166 but since everyone told me that Freestyle tests lower than True, so I gave him 1.5 units of Lantus. He tested BG 56 at +4. I gave him some food and he tested BG 81 at +5. Yesterday, his nadir was at +4 and I assume it's the same today? I'll keep testing him but I just wanted to know if anyone has experienced this..... A quick turnaround or just a fluke?
His spreadsheet is in my signature. Thanks!
