Onetouch Ultra frustrations

I've just started getting successful blood sugar tests at home but with some amount of frustration as the Onetouch Ultra2 keeps erroring saying test strip problem or too little blood. For a machine that is not supposed to need a lot of blood it's disappointing. I must have to prick my poor cat 7 or 8 times to get one successul reading...her ears will be messed up if I have to keep that up. Using 30 gauge BD Ultrafine and now 28 gauge. I'm warming her ears and sometimes it takes me a little longer to get the full blood on the strip but it just starts reading anyway. Anyone else have this issue?

Thanks.

Elizabeth, are you 'sipping' the blood or trying to scoop up the blood? It should be sipped like a straw if you just put the very tip of the strip next to the blood.

Thanks. I will focus on sipping it up next time. My last was better...2 strips, 2 pokes. Getting there...

you could also poke twice in a spot if lancet too fine to get an adequate amount of blood.

as a one touch user, yes it actually takes more blood than the relion or bayer contour -

if you put petroleum jelly on the ear prior to poking, the blood will bead up on the jelly and you can sip from there - that is if you get enough blood to begin with. just another thought.

I use the One Touch, too. You have a little bit of time to get it to sip more blood after it starts the reading process.
I also, will sometimes poke another hole right next to the first poke if I'm not getting enough blood from the first one, especially if I'm using the smaller 30 guage lancets.
You will get the hang of it.

Elizabeth - is it getting easier? My guy and I sometimes have good days, sometimes not so good days. I didn't get the 'sip' method for a while at first, it really does work. Using 28 needles is better also. Truthfully, it is a lot harder on us humans than it is on them.

I use one touch & I have found that it depends what lancet device I use! I can uaually always get blood w/ the One touch Uktra Soft, but the delica I have to poke a few times sometimes- so you might want to try a different lancing device or make the depth setting larger.
