OLM Catnip Cottage

Very Active Member
We took in Moe about 3 weeks ago, an owner surrender to the Catnip Cottage when his owners downsized into a smaller home. His former human caregiver was very allergic and the smaller size of their new dwelling caused his allergies to flare. His doctor strongly encouraged the cats be relocated.

Moe is a 15 year old diabetic who was being treated for about 2 years. He was on lantus, 2 units BID, Purnia DM or Hills MD, and was not home tested.

On intake I altered his diet which he greatly appreciated, began home testing which he was wonderfully tolerant of. He was adjusting quite well.

This weekend he became very ill. He stopped eating, was lethargic, became dehydrated, BG spiked high, nauseous and polyuriac.

I got him into the vet ASAP this morning. We ran blood tests first. His Kreatinine is normal. BUN is very high, though. Globulins and glucose are high, indicating possible infection. His mouth and esophogus are covered in ulcers! FeLv and FIV tests negative.

The vet ruled out renal failure because the kreatinine is normal, but we haven't been able to rule out DKA or pancreatitis yet. He has received medication for the nausea, antibiotics for the infection and is on IV fluids right now.

I'll keep you informed when more is discovered. Moe can use your prayers. He is a very sweet boy. He is our cat of the month, as this is Adopt a Senior Pet month (see the link to our web site at my signature below).

Although Moe is not ready to go home now that he is ill, perhaps some can virtually adopt him or sponsor him? We can surely use your prayers. Sadly, I can also use any donations towards his mounting vet costs as the Catnip Cottage has $22 in its account, and my personal budget is stretched thin carrying the Catnip Cottage. All donations are tax-deductible as we are a 501(c)-3.

Thanks and prayers that Moe pulls through!

Maureen, many many prayers and purrs coming from the gang here that Moe pulls through just fine.
Fingers and paws all crossed that it is nothing to terribly serious.

Moe UPDATE

Thank you for the prayers. KEEP EM COMING.

We've got a good update. Moe is looking perkier with the fluids he's received. They did get a urine sample and there were NO KETONES! We've ruled out DKA. The nausea appears to have been resolved with the medication and fluids. There is no kidney infection.

He is staying in the hospital tonight and they'll test him and administer his insulin, guaging how much to give him depending on his BG test. I'm going to swing by and visit him and bring them his syringes and food from home. The vet feels he will be more apt to eat if he has his own familiar things and food. He already has his favorite blankie with him.

We'll reevaluate tomorrow. If he eats, he may get to come home then.

Poor Moe! Sending lots of prayers that he starts feeling better. Sometimes stress can cause stomatitis also Calicivirus can cause ulcers.

Please keep us updated!

Poor Moe! It does sound like Calicivirus, which both Dev and Conan picked up when they were quite elderly. Yellow ulcers all over the throat and mouth. They did well on sulcrafate and antibiotics (to prevent secondary infection). He will need to be syringe fed for a while to keep him strong and to keep those ketones away!

Sending healing vibes to your sweet boy.

((((Maureen)))) I am so sad to hear this about dear Moe. DCIN has paid some on your account with your vet. All my best wishes for a speedy recovery.
