Beethoven had his first ever dental cleaning yesterday. He did great! He didn't need any x-rays or extractions, much to our relief. The part that worried me a bit was going without eating for nearly 24 hours. We normally feed him at least 3-4 times per day, since that helps keep his BG under control. Today he is doing everything normal--all 5 P's, plus ordering me to open the sliding door to the deck about every 5 minutes so he can either go out or come in. It's just a bit too chilly to leave the door open.

Everyone at the vet clinic likes Beethoven, even though he can get a bit pissy with them. They are amazed that he has stayed OTJ for 15+ months. I always remind them that it is because of the help we got here at FDMB--including frequent home testing--and the fact that we feed him only high protein/low carb wet food (and NOT that prescription stuff).

I'm seriously considering starting to brush his teeth. I tried once before, and it was a disaster. But I realize I probably didn't go about it the right way. I'll try introducing the toothpaste gradually so he can learn the taste, then letting him lick it from the toothbrush, then wiping it gently on his teeth, and finally trying the brush.

Otherwise, we're just getting ready for my upcoming retirement at the end of February. Yay! I don't know who's more excited--DH or me.

Hi! That's great about his dental report, and so wonderful that he has been OTJ for so long. Gives newbies like my Tessie Lou something to hope for!
Good luck with the teeth brushing, and Happy Retirement, too!

I just started brushing my guys teeth. Some friends of mine suggested this product because of the brush -- it's made for cats vs. small dogs.

Yes, that's exactly the kind I have. We'll see how it goes. Beethoven has been very tolerant of all the poking and sticking and pilling--but only after he gets used to it--and only if I'm the one doing it. I suppose teeth brushing will go the same way.
