Oldie coming back as Newbie CRF

Hello Everyone, I am Bonnie from Sweden and I was active on this board for a couple years and then I got sick and pretty much left anything to do with thinking. My cat Cessan was born in october 1994 and I found her dying in a ditch from being dumped when she was 6 months old. She was 400 gm ( 1 pound is 500) and about 9 months old. I think it was 4 years ago maybe 5 ( see my memory is gone on so much) that she became diabetic. She was on caninsulin insulin for a short time before I found this board and changed her food and that was the last insulin she got.
I went through 5 vets before finding a clinic that actually told me the truth that NO they knew nothing about diabetic cats other than the few they had had over the years were put on pills and then put down as it didn't work. But they agreed to listen to me and allow me to do things at home if i agreed not to sue them if I screwed up. One of the vets working there did not agree to work with me and told me if I didn't do or agree with what he said he would put Cessan to sleep immediately. We refuse to let him see Cessan ever!!!
Last fall she started to drink water and I had rarely seen her do this. I checked her blood sugar and it was 4.7 (85) just what it had been for all the years since I found this wonderful place. The only thing I could think of was her food didn't have as much water added as I was trying to get her weight up. She had been 5.2 kg ( about 11 pounds) until she got very ill in mid summer for 1 1/2 days. Her BS went up to 9 and I think it was 15 (270) . She must have tasted something bad when she was outside. Long story why she is outside when she wants in daylight hours but it is against my wishes. But cats rule.
I was trying to get her back up there as she had dropped to 4 kg ( little over 8 pounds) when I weighed her after her illness.
I have been checking her BS and it has been 4.7 (85) and her weight had stayed the same.
Just before Christmas everything was fine.
Now she had begun to really drink the water down ( I am measuring today ) and she slowed down her eating although her cat food just came out with new flavors she loves and are good for her she has been eating less than 1/2 her normal eating and she has thrown up about once a day. Sometimes just a gush of water other times food mixed in. She wants to be held almost all the time. If not in my arms like a baby then on my lap. She stares at me till I put a light fleece like blanket on her. Then she purrs and settles down.
I lifted her up last night as I felt bones where I hadn't before and I put her on the scale ( people scale is all I have ) she had went from 4.2kg (8 pounds) to 3.4 kg ( about 6 pounds). BS this past week are down to 3.3 to 3.6 (60 and 65).
Checking things out I believe that Cessan has CRF. It has been coming on for several months if I count the months of drinking more and more.
I will call the vets on Monday, ( it is closed till Monday as today is a holiday and they are off Friday also) I know I am to get vet advice and will but since they have said they know nothing about diabetic cats and offered to sell me dry food for it I have to know what other cats treatments are and how to manage the food and meds. I see low phosphours and low protein food are suggested but I have only 2 choices of cat food that are no soy or grains or veggies the rest are sauces and garbage. We don't have much choice here. I see prednisone shots or pills are often given and I know that is bad for diabetic cats. The 2 nice vets at this clinic said they would allow me to do fluids at home if I signed a paper and did it once for them at the office. I have never done it but I know how. This came up a few years back when she stopped eating for a week. That was when the lovely other dr refused to let me do fluids at home and said if I didn't put her in the hospital 3 hours drive away for fluids he would put her to sleep. I refused and he gave her a steroid shot and stormed out. It was a mess. They gave her 250 ML then and she stayed dehydrated for the next few days while I fed her with a syringe. around the clock. It was then I talked with the other 2 doctors. I know this is long but I wanted to try and cover everything.
I need to know what you do for CRF cats and what I can help the vets with. The head man is very very nice and said they just never got diabetic cats in and the few they had, people don't want to be bothered. He and a female dr both said when Cessan was sick they wanted suggestions from me and they would check that out and go from there. So please help me.
Thank you so much. Bonnie and Cessan (who is asleep with a blanket around her and her head on my shoulder.)

Re: Oldie coming back as Newbie

I am so sorry you have had such a difficult time, Bonnie. What a fighter you have been for
Cessan.

I have not had to deal with CF. But Holly and Spader regularly posts with links to help:

And you might add CRF to your subject to draw other eyes. I am sure we have people who will help.

Re: Oldie coming back as Newbie

You can put a phosphrous binder into the food you are already feeding.

I used aluminum hydroxide gel powder. Get your vet to write a prescription
for a 500 gram canister and order it from a compounding pharmacy. It's taste-less
and odor-less.

Fluids are important. Better to give smaller amuonts dailn than
to give large amounts several times per week. 250ml is a whopping
amount of fluids !!!

Also Calcitriol is usually given for early CRF.

If nausea, then 1/4 of a 10mg tablet of Pepcid AC (famotidine) 2x /day.
You can also crush and mix this into food.
