Haven't been on here since it was the old board. A few years ago I was one of the newbies that was lost, confused, and distraught after our 1 yr. old kitty began losing weight, urinating all over the place, and having a sore that would not heal from where his eye was removed at the animal shelter (where we retrieved him from). On x-mas eve Chandler was seen at the vet and when tested had a 500+ reading on the meter and dx with diabetes. That was several years ago and I came to this site after I realized instead of 3.0 ml we had given 30 ml of Insulin on that x-mas eve and obviously everything was closed and there was no where to turn, except here. Our story turned out fine thanks to lots of good advise here. I learned to arm myself with knowledge and Chandler has been 'off the juice' for over two years now. We feed Fancy Feast from the list that is low carb. He never wants for any water with the Fancy feast. We never stray from his food, anytime he sneaks bread or dog food, he immediately begins with symptoms. We no longer take his sugar readings like we use to (twice a day with insulin twice a day for quite some time). My honeymooning Chandler is sleeping up on me as I type this. I want everyone to know that no matter how scary it may seem at first, you can take charge and manage your cat's diabetes. I didn't know anything about meters, strips, how to buy needles or give insulin either - but I took control and learned. You can prick the ears, get the blood, use the meter, load up the needle with insulin and give the shots. Even as hopeless as Chandler's situation seemed, he was able to be brought under control and to honeymoon. Ter & Chandler
