I have been hanging on to (and keeping refrigerated) the bottle of Lantus I was using when Jake went into remission just over a year ago. I figured I might need it if he came out of remission. This bottle of insulin was about a month old at the time, so now it is about 13 months old. I just looked at it, and it did not look cloudy nor did it have any floaties in it. I was very surprised. If Jake would need further insulin and it were on a weekend when I couldn't get a new prescription from my vet and I subsequently used the old Lantus until I could see the vet, could this insulin possibly injure or be harmful to Jake since it is so old? Or would it probably be just ineffective at bring BG down?

Most medications can lose potency after a year. Honestly, I'd pitch it. It's way past it's shelf life since it's been opened. If Jake needed insulin that emergently, you would probably be taking him in to an ER and you could get a prescription there.
