OK, Let's talk cat poop...or, more particularly, smell!

I'm sitting here thinking it may be time to buy some type of gas mask! My sweet boy Chester not only poops up a storm, but his poop is...well, aromatic, to say the least. When he first arrived, we changed his diet to low-carb wet food (and he transitioned wonderfully), and I thought the change in diet was probably at the root of the smelliness. That was months ago and althought he doesn't have diarrhea or other "poop problems," the smell isn't improving.

If this situation is just the way Chester is, that is OK (everyone needs to drain their sinuses!), but if there is something I'm missing or something going on internally, I'd like to address it.

What does everyone think?

 My Boomer's poop stinks more than any other cat I've had. At times it's better and at times it's worse. One difference between the others cats and Boomer is that Boomer is the only cat I've ever exclusively fed wet food to. Wet food smells more than dry, so I'm guessing that the poop must smell more too, right? The other thing is that Boomer has IBD and he's also the first farting :o (sorry) cat I've ever had. And boy it smells when he lets one rip. So... for us, I think it's a combo of the type of food and his general intestinal issues.

My Casey has really stinky poops; I figure that's just him. Casey's is made worse by his Alpha-male trait of not covering. Poor thing. Doesn't like to get his feet sandy.

I am not allowed to talk about this. Maui is still trying to get over the fact all the kitties on lantus board made fun of her last year, when she was having major issues in that area.

As the bean who has to clean the boxes - I will say that Maui's is the stinkiest, and Sydney doesn't always bury hers and at 3 am, she does it and it wafts into the bedroom and awakens me and I have to take care of it or the nose will not get any peace!

I have 7 and all are on the same wet food. None of them are fastidious in their bathroom habits--but 3 are really stinkies and the other 4 are "normally" unpleasant. I have 7 litter boxes but they are are equal opportunity poopers.

Just between you and me (Maui will never know!), Chester's stinkies have woke me up in the wee hours as well...you can smell it all over the house, and there is no such thing as burying your head in the pillow deep enough to keep the smell out! Chester does cover his, but that just doesn't help!

Chester's big brother, B.K., is beginning to point at him and laugh all the time...so Maui has a soul mate when it comes to other kitties snickering at her issues.

Sometimes smelly feces is a sign that things aren't being fully digested; Gwyn very occasionally had this problem with her IBD. We gave her B-12 shots, and that helped with the digestion and the smell.

Oh for goodness sake.....I just noticed Spot in the corner laughing up a storm...he must have been reading this post and is remembering poor Ms. Maui's issues last year....I tried to tell him that he needed to be more sensitive to Ms. Maui's secret, especially since he will be heading off to the falls very soon and will be interacting with his friend....sign sometimes these boys just can't help themselves.

My Rudder had IBD and he kept getting more smelly as time went on. Then he had Pancreatitis and the smell got really vile. Plus the color started getting lighter and lighter. Light tan to a yellowy color, and then even smellier. There was no doing anything until I would get it picked up out of the box, and even then, the smell lingered for an hour or so. He died last July, when he started dropping in his numbers, and vomiting with blood and pooping with blood. The vet believe he had cancer in the intestinal tract.

Now, this year, my Schooner (Rudder's brother from the same litter in 1995) is starting to stink worse. His poop is well formed, but it is starting to get lighter in color and somewhat 'greasy' looking sometimes, and it STINKS ultra and excessively BAD!!! He goes around the house more and more doing his howling routine, just like Rudder did the last year or two that he was alive. I wondered if it might be senility, or if they have been in pain. Schooner is not diabetic (I do want to check his numbers this weekend though to make sure), but I do think he may have IBD or pancreatitis.

I have a friend that also has a cat with pancreatitis and she said her poop is very, very rancid smelling.

Gee, such an interesting topic....HAHAHA!!! These are the times that try our nostrils :dizcat , and the times when I sometimes envy the folks that have cats that do their pooping outside.

Sounds like Spot and B.K. attended the same sensitivity training! It's to the point that, before I even know Chester is in the litter box, B.K. starts running...and, I have to admit, B.K. does have a point - the smell really lingers in a mustard-gas sort of way!

Fortunately, Chester's poops have all been normal in terms of size, color, etc. His BG's are good, he's eating normally, doesn't have an upset stomach or exhibit any pain. I think the sad fact of the matter is this: Chester's @#%@ does stink! dancing_cat

I gave Shadow many nicknames over the years, but when she was a baby it was "Little Kitty Big Stink." I could NOT understand how something so tiny could make a smell like that!

This thread has me laughing so hard that my DH came in to see what was so funny!

The really funny thing was that we had to light some candles in the bathroom (where we have the litter box set up for the new kitties) and turn on the fan today after CJ used the box. We were laughing hysterically while we were holding our noses and rushing to light candles and get away from the stink...hehee...it still makes me laugh.

If it's an ongoing thing, I wouldn't worry. We switched Arnold to wet food and things loosened up some and got a little smellier. He had an infection though a month or so back and WOW, it was bad! He also had some blood in his stools though so we knew there was a problem. The smell got better as he did and we haven't had much of a problem since.

Oh, yeah...it's an ongoing thing! Fortunately, Chester doesn't have any other symptoms or problems...no infections, blood in stools, etc. One thing I did learn is that, before he arrived here, Chester was fed table scraps of human food pretty much all the time. At the vet's, he wasn't receiving a low-carb wet diet, either...so his diet changed radically when he got here. The malodorous nature of his poop has remained a constant throughout...makes me wonder what it would be like if I gave him that bacon he's always lobbying for!
