Hello, my wife and I are new to the forum. We have a diabetic cat who is not responding well to more conventional treatment and we're interested in the tight regulation management technique. Would anyone happen to know of a veterinarian in New York City (or the New York metropolitan area in general) that would be supportive of this approach to treating our kitty?

First of all I guess I would like to ask what is it your vet is doing, maybe we can help. Is your kitty being treated currently for the diabetes?
If you are using Lantus insulin your best bet would be to move over to the Lantus forum here. Most vets are not familiar with tight regulation management.
Please take a look at our Lantus forum which utilizes a Tight Regulation Protocol until someone comes along that can recommend a vet for you.

Welcome to FDMB.

Please tell us a bit about yourself and your diabetic kitty and answer a few questions so we have a better idea what is going on.

What insulin are you using?
What food are you feeding?
Are you home testing the blood glucose?
Has your cat ever had ketones or ketoacidosis?
How old is your cat?
Are there other medical problems such as:
Dental or bladder infection? Pancreatitis? IBD? Hepatic lipidosis?

Since you are already using insulin, your first step should be learning to home test if you are not doing so already. You need an inexpensive human glucometer such as the WalMart ReliOn Confirm or Prime, matching test strips, and 26 to 28 gauge lancets to prick the outer edge of the ear.

Take a look at my signature link Secondary Monitoring Tools for additional assessments you may wish to make.

There are Vet Interview Topics in my signature link, too. If you go to Google Maps and search for veterinarian near {fill in your address}, you'll get a list of who is near you. Then you call or write with the questions.

If they say they use Humulin or Novolin insulin, or glipizide, ask if they would be interested in learning how the Lantus Tight Regulation protocol works in cats.and if the answer is no, look elsewhere.
