I dont get a chance to test everyday with work so i normally test on weekends. From last weekend her numbers have skyrocketed,gone a up a couple hundred points at peak time on lantus. My guess is the pen is almost empty,about a weeks worth. Is it possible this insulin is wore out,i think im going to open a new pen tonight but bad thing is i wont be able to test till next weekend again.
 
Btw,no food changes and she has been playing and feeling fine,ud never know her numbers were high. The normal peak time is 8.5 hrs but i checked her a few times today and the peak time was sooner this time,which makes me think the insulin is wearing off sooner than it should?
 
By the time i get home its almost time for a new shot time,so im at work all day and cant come home to test
 
I get that, there's only 24 hours in a day and we all have complicated lives. Not being a smartass. Have you posted this in the Lantus forum?
 
even if insulin is bad, i was honestly thinking that it doesn't take that long with most cats, so can you not at least test her right before she gets her shots/injections? that will give you at least an idea about how high glucose level is getting everyday and will allow you to make insulin adjustment with your vet over phone if need be.. Am no pro but, can't help to think that just because her glucose level is at a certain level during weekends, it doesn't mean her numbers during the weekdays aren't a lot higher, best to 'at least' test before injections IMO.

Ill test her right before tomorrows shot,not sure what to expect,prob somewhat high,im not use to testing then. But will get in habit. I gave her new insulin for tnights shot.

i chose lantus so i can feed my underweight cat whenever i/he want, hasn't affected his numbers much at all, (i feed low carb food/s). vet specialist said to be sure to feed before insulin however, so i test 30mins before injection time and feed him right afterwards. i would think an hour is just fine too.

We actually don't want them to eat for the 2 hours before shot time, so that when we test before shooting, the number isn't influenced by food.

You might want to look into getting an auto feeder.....that way you could set it so she can eat during the day (and overnight) but have it rotate to an empty space at least 2 hours before shot times.

If you can't test during the day due to work, it's important that you test on the PM cycle....most cats go lower at night, so if you get a few tests on the PM cycle, it could really help to figure out what's going on with your cat

not sure what you mean by a this or nothing situation but, i usually feed him like every other hour and he grazes on YA and sometimes EVO during day and usually eats just dry overnight (except for past week, wanted to see how his numbers would be without food overnight). Technically, with lantus i don't really need to make sure he eats a meal before giving him his injections since he always has food in his belly but, i do so anyways because it became a habit and when he gets his weight back i want to have some set main big meal times he is use to.

I meant your schedule is so tight, as mine has been when working 3 jobs, you just don't have time to feed, then wait, then test... . Depending on the insulin, your cat and a million other things some rules can be bent slightly. That would be better than just giving up, just be careful and sure. It is not better for me to imply or say anything else because I don't use Lantus and I'm not in your situation. Ask about automatic feeders. There's always another way.
 
So if i feed her when i get home i shouldnt test her before shot?,she eats when i get home then hr latet or so i shoot. Should i test her right when i get home before i feed her instead of right before her shot? I also shooy her in the scruff,but diffrent spots of course
 
I have to back out of this thread but explain why first. The protocols for Lantus and Caninsulin/Vetsulin are very different in some regards. I can give general advice but you've been here two years longer than I have, you know this already. This is the part where I either sound thoughtful or like an ***hole. Whenever I look at the Lantus forum it's like another world to me but I honestly think you'd get better answers there. As for the real basic stuff, never ever feel too silly to ask for a refresher course even if it means going back to day one. I have some neurological issues and one of them is brutal memory loss. Noah is our second diabetic cat and after all this time my wife sometimes says "Shouldn't you do this first and then do that?".

Do u have a pic of where in the rear leg area u shoot?
 
A lot of people use the scruff, I only switched because of Nigel's weight loss and scar tissue. It's perfectly okay to do it that way.
The Lantus forum is pretty nuts isn't it? It's like the really fast lane next to the fast lane. I have to log off for awhile.
 
Update. Got home and tested right away,she is 10 hrs into her shot and tested at 227 much better than yesterdays 500 at peak time. New insulin has seemd to drop the numbers!
 
That happens with Caninsulin too, it fizzles away day by day. It's a little odd you didn't get more responses, I saw your post in Lantus but when 20 more pop up yours goes to the bottom. These insulins are all designed to act in a different way and I've only ever used Caninsulin on 2 cats so I'm really just sitting here watching you. Not much help is it?
