I have started home testing and I have some numbers to share - see sig. Buster seems to enjoy starting the mornings around 400 and then he settles down throughout the day. He doesn't get up high enough to dose again at PMPS. I am feeding Wellness Turkey and Chicken flavors. So far I've been feeding QID with larger amounts at dosing time and smaller amounts for lunch and bedtime snacks. Canned only. He seems to be responding very well to the carb change - I think maybe that makes him carb sensitive? Dosing .5u at AMPS. Thoughts?

Should I feed a slightly higher carb food?
Should I try to dose at .25 so I can do 2 doses per day? And how exactly do you do that with these silly syringes - lol!
Should I just chill out and get more numbers?

He's probably jumping up in the high numbers in the morning because he's getting no insulin at night. I'd do the same thing though, with numbers in the green and blue he shouldn't be dosed. I think that maybe you could try giving a smaller shot in the morning, maybe .25 or so. The stickies show how much insulin to draw to get a .25, has pics and everything. I'd try sending a PM to the vet gal Rebecca, that does the website, she may help or one of the people on the tight Lantus board. They are very good at helping newbies. Good luck with your boy. They do tend to swing when first starting out on the insulin and the low carb food. Hopefully, you will be able to go off the juice with just a diet change for Buster! dancing_cat dancing_cat dancing_cat

Hi, Tara. Sue asked for some of us from the Tight Regulation board to stop by.

I suspect you know this but Lantus is typically dosed twice a day. A cat's metabolism is twice as fast as a human's. As a result, if you're dosing only once a day, the first 12 hours you'll see numbers come down and without insulin, the numbers will spike back up.

If Buster had a symptomatic hypo at the outset, there's a good chance he's sensitive to the effect of insulin.

Generally, if someone is having difficulty shooting twice a day because numbers are too low to shoot comfortably, one strategy is to lower the dose. You could drop Buster's dose to 0.25u and see if that will allow you to give a twice a day injection.

It's looking like this forum has not been terribly busy. You're welcome to post on the Lantus Tight Regulation board. There are a number of people who follow the Start Low Go Slow approach who post on the TR board. People are usually there almost 24/7.

Thanks! I was kinda leaning toward dropping down to .25. I will look at the sticky's and figure out how to do so.

Hello Tara and Buster,
I was just looking over your ss.
I saw Buster had a hypo just a short time ago. Hypo's can make cats sensitve to insulin and as I look at your chart,
you've had some other lower numbers and then high again which indicates a bounce.
There may have been some other low drops during a cycle which could put Buster in a scary situation again.

I'd like to encourage you to come over to the tight regulation forum and post there.
We have others who aren't necessarily doing the tight regulation either.
It's just that is where many of us are and you would have lots of input and advise to help you get a better start and help
protect Buster from having another incident.

Is there a reason you had been only shooting once a day?
It will make it difficult to regulate your cat that way or work towards remission.
You've been getting some testing in and that's what others will want so they can look at patterns and help you to help Buster.

Please come post there in the morning when you give your reduced dose.
Rhiannon

Hey Rhiannon - I will move over to the TR forum for sure. I was only shooting once a day because he wasn't coming up to a number high enough at PMPS to do so. I understand Lantus works best BID. I did .25 this morning - I will post in the TR forum...
