I apologize if this is on the board somewhere. I've searched and online and can't seem to find much. Gus is just two weeks into twice daily, 1 unit ProZinc, U-40 syringe. He's also been transitioned to wet food. He definitely appears to be feeling better - no more urination out of litter box, less water drinking, cuddly, jumping again. That makes me feel confident that the insulin/diet change is helping. However, his numbers still seem to be in the high range. His highest - at start was 390. His lowest was 216. I suspect he finished off some dry food in his sister's bowl last night, hence the higher readings there. (The civvy cats are still getting some dry with the wet to help them transition.) I have only been doing pre-shot readings at this point, but will definitely start getting some other ones in as I understand this will provide me some addt'l insight into things.

I guess I'm just wondering - is this normal? His first follow-up appt with the vet is on Sat 16 (3 weeks exactly from diagnosis). I just got so little info from the vet when he was diagnosed that I don't even know what his blood sugar was before we started treatment. How fast should I be seeing a drop? I realize the the diet change will have impact. Any input is appreciated. I know the impact isn't overnight...and I'm definitely not a real patient person.

I've been on the general board but was referred over here for some ProZinc specific insight. Thank you!

Welcome, Robyn. You should get some responses a little later when the evening "crew" comes on. We have about 10 regular posters - a small, but friendly group.

I am the "Sue and Oliver" who replied to you on Health. Be sure to check out some of the other threads and other people's spreadsheets. We have the gamut - from people giving tiny doses to people giving much larger amounts who are dealing with additional issues like pancreatitis, bad teeth and on-going infections.

It sounds pretty normal to me - it generally takes a few weeks or more to get them regulated.

You can't really tell a whole lot from PSs by themselves, so once you get a chance to get some midcycle data, then you can evaluate the dose and decide on your next step.

Ideally it would be great if you can do a mini-curve one day - +3, +6, +9 tests as well as the PSs. Or if you can get spot tests here & there that is great too - maybe a +4 one day, +6 another day, etc. Even a bedtime test is helpful - anything you can get helps to fill in the picture.

Hi Robyn and welcome to our little group!

It normally takes awhile to get the kitties in better numbers, but it appears you are well on your way. Congrats on home testing!

Once again, Welcome!

Kim and Kitty

I'll definitely reiterate what the others have said about getting some midcycle numbers or doing a curve. I didn't realize how important they were until this year. Unless you get in-between numbers, you have no idea when your cat nadirs or how low she goes. That is valuable information in figuring out a dose. For example, my cat did not go as low today as normal based on midcycle numbers, so I know I need to increase her dose a little. I also know that yesterday she had a little bounce because I had data on how low she went between shots. If time is a problem, getting at least one number mid-cycle is helpful, though with a cat new to insulin curves are a very good idea once in a while.

Welcome to the PZI board!

Hi Robyn

I'm from Minnesota to, I live in St.James which is 2 hours southwest of you ! I'm new to so no advice from me but if I wouldn't have found this site nailbite_smile my vet is a poop head , she is young and didn't want me to home test and said i couldn't believe anything i read on the internet unless I pay for it ?? thats a big what ever to her  I did my first curve on my callie yesterday, I will take advice from my FDMB family and what my heart says before my vet! I took callie off all dry and she is on all fancy feast classic so is her sister , they ate canned before but all with gravey, I would leave dry out for them to nibble on.

I have to bring callie to the vet tomorrow so SHE can check callies bg and I'm bringing callies meter with to go up against hers,
then that will be the last time callie has to go for that , she hates car rides and the vets office.

sorry this is getting so long just want to say you found the best place on earth for you and your kitty !! :YMHUG:

oh forgot to say the vet perscribed w/d dry food for callie I paid $28.00 bucks for it and neither of my girls would eat it, and if you look at callie's ss you will see before she started pro zinc she was comming down in numbers just with the change to fancy feast!

Hi again and welcome,

Your ss looks pretty normal and you are starting to get some yellow PS's.

What everybody else said about testing mid cycle, it is the only way for you to know how the insulin is working for her and what you should do with the dose.

Glad you joined us. :-D

Thank you everyone. I guess I just needed a little reassurance that things are progressing the right way. We'll definitely want to get a mini-curve or at least some more numbers before we take him to the vet on Saturday.

I'm sorry that Calliecat's vet seems not to have a bedside manner, so to speak. We are always told to advocate for ourselves to doctors. I think the same should go for our pets. We need to advocate for them.
