Leo has been on 1.5u Prozinc. I got a number today 6 hours and 45 minutes after his morning injection of 180. He was testing in the beginning before insulin as high as 485. Is 180 an ok number for this many hours past morning injection? You can tell I'm very new at this.

Hi Lillie! Yes, 180 is a fine number. Did you happen to get a test this morning before your shot? If the 485 you mentioned was at the vet, be aware that the number was probably higher than at home...vet stress can cause the numbers to be 100 points or more higher.

Really, you only worry if you get a 50 or below on a human meter or 68 and below on a pet meter...what meter are you using?

180 is nice as it's under 250...which is when we think the pancreas begins to heal. And the 6 hours past the shot means you're probably at the lowest point of the cycle.

On a side note, have you read our protocol and beginner's guide? Good info to help you learn about this journey!

What other questions do you have? We'd really love to help you and Leo as you go through this!

No, no test before the shot. I used the alpha trak with a needle the vet gave me. It was to say the least a test of will between me and Leo! He was not thrilled and very cranky! Anyway- his vet visit was after I did the test so he could check him and weigh him. His 485 numbers were at the vets but his fructosamine test done about 14 days ago was very high on average 570 so the vet today was pretty pleased. Leo stayed at the vets initially for 5 days for a curve etc and they put him on 1u and then upped it to 2u. I later decreased it to 1.5 because he was so so lethargic and I didn't have a glucose meter yet but decided to decrease it anyway.
When I told the vet I decreased it on my own because I wanted to make any increases slowly from 1u he seemed to be ok with it. So I guess we will see how many more pricks my boy will put up with. He is not very happy about having it done. I'm glad the number was ok- I was worried. Yes I've been reading everything here and will probably re read everything again. Thanks for replying. I can use all the help I can get.

Yeah, the testing takes some getting used to for them. Do you have low carb treats....like freeze dried chicken? That's the best way to get them used to it. Our suggestion is to pick a testing spot (I used a towel on the floor by the fridge). Take the kitty there, poke, and immediately give a treat. He'll start to associate the pokes with treats and will come running at test time! While he's getting used to it, why not take him to the test spot several times throughout the day, rub his ears a bit, and then give a treat so he gets used to it faster?

Also, make sure you warm the ear well...helps the blood flow. A lot of people make a rice sock with rice in a baby sock that they warm slightly in the microwave. Others fill a pill bottle with warm water. I just rubbed Gypsy's ear. Whatever works best.

It gets much easier and they really do get used to it. Gypsy never WANTED me to poke her ears, but she still came right to me when I shook the box of lancets so she could get that treat!

Yep since you are on AT, 68 is the number at which you worry over a hypo. If you get a number around 80 or so you want to start checking more to make sure he doesn't drop lower.

The decrease was probably good...their dose was based on numbers they got when he was stressed out most likely, so the number was higher.

Let us know what else we can do! Please ask any questions you have here...the beginning of this sugar dance is hardest and there are (seriously) no dumb questions. And sometimes it just makes it easier to share with others who have been there!

ProZinc usually has a nadir (lowest number) between 5-7 hours so that is typically when you will see his lowest reading :). Definitely try the desensitizing exercise with Leo and try your best to stay calm. Our kitties can pick up on our anxiety ;). Some people sing or hum to distract their emotions, I just turn on the TV. Like other kitties, Maury isn't thrilled about the poke but he knows if he settles on my lap for a few moments he will get a treat :cat:

Thank you! I'll try the desensitizing. I've been doing some lately now and then. He does have Pure Bites duck treats that he loves so I can use those. Although he gets them regularly so I'm not sure he considers it a treat anymore. Ha
