Has anyone used it, what is it and can you explain how it works, for me?

Vet mentioned it and said is doesn't work too well with cats. We were just bouncing around ideas. She knows I use R for Lucian's high times.

Just wondered if anyone has any experience with it.

Debbie,

I have used NPH in the past, but not for cats. First, it is a Recombinant DNA based insulin as is Lantus and Levemir. Secondly, it lasts about 8-12 hours in humans, so will not last 6 hours in our felines. Feline metabolism is twice as fast as humans.

If you use it for Lucian, you would probably have to dose it 4 times a day. It's action is fairly quick and then a drop off. Not as dramatic as R, but similar.

Did you ask your vet about a trial of BCP PZI? They are making a beef/pork based insulin based on the original Lilly insulin that I used back in the 70's. Lots of humans think this was a more effective insulin. RDNA ma be profitable for big Pharma, but did not help people or animals. You would dose this insulin 3 times a day - every 8 hours on a sliding scale based on the BG that you see at the time of dosing. No depot and no shed to contend with.

Good luck with your search for another insulin for Lucian.

Also known as Humulin N it is basically a slightly longer acting version of R. It lasts about 6-8 hours in their bodies and is an in and out insulin. It was the first insulin I used with Muse before I knew better. It does work well for TID shooting.

There is a primer for it on the board. Can't link you right now as on phone. But wouldn't be my first choice for someone like Lucian that is already prone to spectacular bouncing as it hits hard and drops them fast. I would be more inclined ask about BCP PZI or the newer Prozinc for Lucian. Sue and Oliver (GA) would be the go to person on the P insulins as well as the out dated NPH.

I'm contemplating using it for Autumn to just tap her down after she eats but only because I can't reduce her Levemir dose any further down and yet she can't hold OTJ.

Thanks ya'll!

We're waiting on a trial insulin, just not sure which one it is, either PZI or ProZinc, memory sux. If I remember right, it's the one that was made for cats maybe? That's why I wanted to try it, since he's had so much problems with human insulin. I'll try anything that might help.

I was just wondering about the NPH and it's what I thought. I don't want to have to shoot 4-6 times a day if I don't have to. Hard enough with twice and R occasionally. Poor cat feels like a pin cushion.

I checked the emails from the vet and it's PZI that we're waiting on. The producers offer a 100U trial free for vets, so our vet has sent for it so we can try it on Lucian. If it helps him, at least we can get him started and I'll worry about getting more later. Don't know if DCIN can help with that.

Anyone have any ideas about that?

Debbie,

I'm glad to see that you are getting the trial of PZI. Guessing it is BPC PZI. It is an animal based insulin and might just be a big improvement for Lucian.

@Claudia Yes, we're waiting on it, vet requested the trial. Hoping he does better with it.

It has been so weird! He was doing great on the Levemir until the last earned reduction. After that, it's like he wasn't responding anymore. Crazy.
