Sorry I haven't been around much today...had to bring 2 cats to the vet. Apparently both have UTIs (one is the one who just had the UTI). Guys...I don't know what to do. I can't keep going to the vet every few weeks...it's horrendously expensive and it doesn't seem to be doing any good. They're doing a culture and sensitivity but I have no idea what has caused this. What is it that is making my cats sick? Why don't antibiotics seem to clear it up? Any advice would be welcome...I'm a bit of a wreck right now. I'm beginning to think I'm going to have to put her to sleep and I know that is a horrible thing to say, but I can't afford to have her constantly sick and she's got to be miserable. And now with a second cat sick...I'm at a loss.

Oh so sorry Rachel. I don't know if this has anything to do with UTI but would using distilled/reverse osmosis water would help i.e. more purified water? I have read that cranberry paste or cranberry pills may be worthwhile to try? http://www.nofleausa.com/p/UTIPaste25oz Also read that a little bit of lemon juice in the water may help with the PH? Are these males? Food with low magnesium or low ash? I may be getting this mixed up with UT blockage in males. Maybe a little lysine?

Oh Rachel, I'm sorry you are having double trouble. Weird that they both would get a UTI. Does the vet know what is causing it? If it is due to partial obstruction such as crystals forming, I have had really good luck when I added some blueberry powder that I bought on line to Forrest ,my civvie cat's food. Since I did that, no more issues, before I tried that, he had 2 of them. The only way I knew he was having them was the peeing inappropriately. Wellness wet cat food adds cranberry to their no grain flavors for that reason. I know Cindi mentioned the same thing. The idea is to make the urine more acidic so crystals can't form. Hopefully it will be that simple for you too. Sometimes, it is just stress that will cause them. Keeping good thoughts for you and your kitties.

It's my female cats (though now I'm worried about my male cat too...if everyone else has it, might he?). They said Elektra (had them previously) was BETTER. They said she might just need another round of antibiotics. Tigress had a mild one they think maybe from stress. They suggested prescription diet of course...but I know better.

We recheck in 2 weeks and pray these antibiotics take effect. If they don't, I don't know what to do. My boyfriend thinks they may just be taking me for my money...and that I need to try a different vet.

A few years ago I had a cat that was prone to UTI's. My then vet had me give her vit. C tablets to lower the Ph. Don't know if that's ok for diabetics or not. It did seem to help her though.

I am so sorry to hear about your kitties, Rachel. It is extra stressful to have two kitties with problems and the vet bills don't help for sure. Lets hope the antibiotics work and they will be doing better soon. Maybe some of the good suggestions here might help also. Keep us posted and hang in there.

Thanks everyone! Well the vet did try to sell me on prescription food (and I know that isn't helpful...but lord knows I wish it was!) I played dumb and told her they wouldn't eat it. It's easier.

Tigress had a giant pee in the carrier on the way home. I was half happy since she probably needed it and I think it meant she felt better. I was half sad since then I had to clean the carrier (which didn't actually bug me...it was easy to take the top off) but I also had to clean her. She was thrilled.

Elektra peed a tiny bit in the carrier. Just a couple drops.

Everyone seems okay too but I'm shopping for a new vet. Thinking of taking them for their 2 week recheck to someone new to get a second opinion and also because the BF thinks they are trying to take me for my money...and I guess it couldn't hurt. For now, trying to let the antibiotics work...I want to take them NOW but know I should give them time to let the drugs work.

Anyway, I'm like a newly diabetic cat mom...following them around and watching them wherever they go. I need to calm down! Hopefully sleep will come to me tonight...that might help.

Thanks for the suggestions all! I'm going to research what you all suggested. I want to look into it some and see what will be best.
