Hi all -
I haven’t been here since I lost my Molly girl. With the love and support from everyone here my baby girl lead a full, quality life with proper treatment.
My sweet, sweet niece just called in tears. Their family cat was recently diagnosed. The vet prescribed Novolin 2x daily. He is not responding and is declining quickly. They are not testing at home (they’re not there yet). Today’s vet office revealed a bg of 447 : ( The vet is now saying that Novolin may not be the insulin for him and suggests another kind. With my baby I was using Levemir and found it to be quite effective. Is Levemir still an insulin of choice? They can’t afford to buy more insulin. My heart breaks listening to my niece and hearing how sick their feline baby is. Any advice, I’d greatly appreciate ❤️

tagging @Chris & China (GA) to ask whether she can give you more info on how to connect with DCIN.

Can you tell us a little more about their worries about testing and the clinical signs their boy is showing? Maybe if we had a little more info we might be able to suggest something to help?

For your niece: >>>> :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Here is the DCIN information about assistance:

Note two of our Case Managers (including me) are dealing with family crises right now... I have had to let DCIN know I can't take on any new cases for the time being :(

Prozinc and Lantus are often lower-cost options than Levemir. It may be helpful to send the vet the 2018 AAHA Diabetic Guidelines, which discourage the use of Novolin in cats: https://www.aaha.org/globalassets/02-guidelines/diabetes/diabetes-guidelines_final.pdf

Lantus and Levemir are insulins that are used by humans, as well. They are expensive. However, many people here purchase their insulin from Mark's Marine Pharmacy in Vancouver, Canada. Their prices are about 1/4 of the dose here.
