Not the greatest timing, but I am going out of town

I go to MI every Oct and am going late this year, but it has been planned for a while and I don't want to cancel. Originally, I thought I could wait until early Nov. to take Cami, but once I met her and learned she was occasionally having ketone breath, BGs in the mid 300s, and how utterly thin she was, I knew she needed immediate help.

The options for handling her while I am gone were: take her back to former owner who would shoot insulin, but not test; board at a vet; or take her with me. None of these are a great option for her they each have many cons and few pros, but I weighed them and decided it was best to keep her with me because I can continue to monitor her BG and she can continue to get used to me and the other kitties.

I always take the cats with me and have a large dog crate in the back of my SUV with LB, sleeping shelves and plenty of room for them all. I can't put Cami in with them yet so she will have to ride next to me in a carrier. I have a LB that fits in the foot well and will let her out of the carrier at rest stops.

We are leaving tomorrow morning and will be back Sunday the 28th. I will have limited access to the internet, so will probably only check in on Mon, Weds and Fri of next week.

Please send safe, CALM, travels for us!

Maybe this is what Cami needs- a trip to somewhere that also has you bringing her back with you.

Sending safe travel prayers and calming vibes your way. Maybe it'll be a good thing for Cami to go to the house in Michigan where she will have more room to stretch out. And I agree with Heather - in the end it'll be good for her to learn that she and the other cats can travel with you and will come home safely.

Have a wonderful, safe, sane trip!

This might be great for Cami...being next to you in the car and knowing that you are going together and you won't be abandoning her when the car stops. As well as all of the furry critters being in the enclosed vehicle and hearing each other and smelling each other, during the drive.

I'll bet you'll talk to them all during the drive time, as well. That's another huge positive! It secures Cami's position as a member of the gang!

Have a wonderful time in Michigan. I'll bet it's gorgeous there right now with all of the leaves changing colors!

I love the colors up there in Oct, but I might be a bit late for them this year.

I always talk to the cats in the car. I might have to sing to them this time because I can't find my MP3 player! I have about 40 hrs of music on it and listen to it up there as well as in the car. Its going to s*ck if I cant find it.

Well, I better go finish packing stuff. I have tons to do still.

ETA: I found my player! Yay! (of course it's also over an hour past when I wanted to be in bed... I always run so late getting ready for these trips) .
 
I think everyone else is on to something....add Cami, mix, and come home to a calm home. Maybe adding her in the middle of an upset of routine will make the transition easier once you are back at home. I SO respect you for taking her in.....and she just looked so sad.....she is one lucky girl! Have a safe trip!
 
By now you are probably there and settling in. I hope the trip went well. :) We will wait to hear from you!

Cami will come to realize that this family of yours is her forever home. She is indeed a lucky kitty.

Hoping the trip went smoothly, and that Cami has realized she's part of the family now!

I know it's probably somewhat of a challenge, since the others know the drill, but I'm sure it was good for all of you to be together. And as Heather said, it's good for her to ride in the car somewhere, then come all the way back and get to stay!
 
She was fine in the car - although we had a communication problem! She was quiet for about 45 mins and then started getting cranky and pawing at the carrier bars and fussing. I just told her to settle down. After about 15 mins of that, she peed in the carrier. Guess she was trying to tell me she had to GO! I ended up letting her out of the carrier and put the carrier pad (which, luckily, I had covered in a plastic garbage bag) on the car seat. She spent the rest of the trip in the litter box on the floor or behind it and a little bit on the seat.

She has been quieter up here than she was at home - enough so that I feel OK leaving them all out together and be gone for a few hours. Beau can get upset with her hissing, but the other two are just ignoring her. She actually got up on my bed at night Friday and Sat and we had a little cuddle and purr.

Can't remember if I mentioned that I found out she was just declawed about a year ago and former person said she was not confident about jumping up on things. The bed is one of those really high ones (almost too high for me, lol) and she has no trouble getting on it. I am running out of places to put the food dishes for the other cats that are high enough that she can't get to them.

She did throw up her breakfast this morning. Luckily, I hadn't given insulin yet. I think it was the enzymes I add to the Wellness/Great Choice mix. I waited 30 mins and fed her plain food and she was ok. Planning on doing a curve tomorrow.

She is already looking better - her eyes seem clearer/brighter and more open. I can't say if she has gained weight, but I suspect she is since her BG is down and she is eating 12 oz (or more) a day. She is beginning to notice other things, look out the window, lay quietly, instead of being in starvation/feed me! mode all the time.
 
Sounds like it's been a successful trip. Glad she's getting along so well... and that she taught you what it means when she cries in the carrier (mine had to teach me that too!) ;-)
 
So nice to hear she is doing better. It is nice they are all adjusting. Her numbers are looking real good! She is one lucky little girl. :-D
