Well here I am again. not sure what to do. I pretty much took the weekend off from testing Rex because last week was super stressful for both of us regarding testing and numbers. Saturday and Sunday he seemed to be his normal self. he was eating good and acting more playful. we got outside a bit, etc. I did notice he was not drinking as much water as he had been for a while. his urination seems to stay about the same, maybe a little bit less. I was very hopeful today when I did his morning preshot test that maybe it would be much lower since he has been acting more chipper and drinking less, etc. It was 413. I just retested now at 4 hours post-shot and it was 393. what now? is it time to make a visit to the vet?? so far he has had only ONE "good" number - 203 which happened one day last week when he happened to be getting over a day of diarrhea and not eating much. Rex is a free feeding cat. always has been. could that be part of the reason his numbers are never that good?? not sure of the timing with testing/eating, etc. bottom line though - I really don't think his dose of 1 unit 2x a day is enough. correct??

You can feed whenever... Just not two hours before preshot testing so the numbers are not food influenced.

I don't use lantus, but looks like he might be ready for an increase. There are protocol information stickies at the top of the lantus forums.

his numbers are probably very food influenced. he eats a lot in the early am and I give his shot at 8:30 AM. I will definitely take a look at the stickies. thank you for the info.

have you ever found a good cheap place for test strips for your AlphaTrak? is your cat still in remission? I just ordered a sample of the YA Zero food.

I really think he is overdue for an increase but you need to become more comfortable with the testing so you can know how the dose is effecting him. I think your dates are a little messed up on the SS ;). Have you posted any questions for dosing on the Lantus thread? The more experienced members might be able to help more.

I think there was some issue with the dates on the meter. I fixed it now. However, I have been testing more (just have not documented some of them yet) and I am starting to feel like the whole testing multiple times a day is just not going to work with him. he gets so upset. I tested him twice today and now he wont come in the room with me again. whenever I test him he just looks disheveled. i have to think with the number of times I have tested him by now he should not be getting the deer in the headlights look in his eyes for hours afterward. I have to think that this too could be affecting his numbers. I did not test him at all over the weekend and he was happy as a clam, was eating better, etc. I agree that I feel like he should have had an increase in his lantus a while ago. I have brought this up on the message board before. I have a weird vet situation right now - with two vets basically involved in this - and they have differing opinions. unfortunately the one whose opinion I agree with for the most part has gone down to only part time and usually is not available when I want to talk to her or see her. at any rate the vet they usually stick me with is not one I particularly like and have greatly differing opinions on this subject. she has told me point blank that she will not consider any home testing numbers in her treatment. she only relies on fructosamine testing. I understand that that type of testing is not necessarily adequate, however that is what I have been told by her. I will try again to get a different vet involved or just insist that I see the part time vet and not discuss his treatment with any other vet until I find one I like - even if it is at a different clinic. I would attempt to increase his dose on my own, but I have a lantus pen which only goes up in 1 unit increments, so I would have to obtain syringes to increase it and I am thinking I cannot just go out and buy syringes (with needles). I will definitely go to the lantus forum to see if I can find out anything more.

I'm not sure where you're located, but you can buy syringes in some locations without a prescription. I don't need a prescription for them in Arkansas. (I buy mine at Walmart.)

I don't need one in Maryland, either. There's an idea- maybe we should put together a list of states that do and don't require a Rx for syringes! Of course, one may already exist, I haven't looked into it....
