Not sure about the canned food, how to do it

I work all day, can seldom make it home for a test. My sugar is a grazer, and my civie is a hoover. I am considering switching them to canned, given the results I have seen here, but I can routinely only feed in the am, about 5pm and a small meal about 9 pm. Is that enough?

Ideas:
Add a tablespoon or two of water to the wet food if not already doing that.
Spread thinly across a wide plate to slow down the consumption.
Freeze some of the meal to be eaten as it thaws.
Use a timed feeder to portion out mini-meals so he never gets too hungry.

I just switched. Basically I feed them at 7am and 7pm to coincide with Benny's shots. They do very well. All mine were more or less grazers prior. And I do leave a little bit of kibble in their bowls while at work and overnight. Two of mine are obese so I really try to monitor their calories. They were more like hoovers too, lol.

I feed my civie Beni and Dusty (in remission) at 5am about 1/4 can of FF each (Dusty mixed with water, helps keep him regular) then I leave them each a whole can to nibble on throughout the day while I'm at work and then I feed them 1/4 can when I come home around 3pm, then at 8pm another 1/4 can and overnight I leave them a whole can each to nibble on. What keeps them from eating each other's food? Dusty likes chicken/liver FF and Beni likes turkey FF but not the other so they stay away from each other's food.

The Mixed Grill is roughly 11% calories from carbohydrates, so I tend to avoid that. It can be mixed in with one of the lower ones to reduce the average % of calories from carbohydrates ([same amount 8%+same amount 11%] / 2 =9.5% calories from carbohydrates) .
Anything on the Cat Info list < 10% calories from carbohydrates can be tried.

My worry about them accepting the canned food was SOOOOO undeserved. Shiloh ate about 2 oz, my civie a little more. Will still leave a little dry down for grazing for a couple of days, just to see how things go. I hope this makes a big difference! I like the yellows, but would love blues and greens!

ETA: I gave her shot while she was eating, and she didn't even stop.

Goof got all wet food for the first time tonite, NO VOMITTING! Yay! I've been working on this for a few weeks, literally increasing wet/decreasing dry by the teaspoonful. It hasn't done much by wig of change in his numbers yet, but I'm hopeful. I need to update his spreadsheet.

Rhonda, if they ate that much wet food, I'd bet that you'll have no problems getting them to switch.

My Bob is about a month out of the hospital for pancreatitis and DKA, and we have three other cats. They had always been free-fed 'premium' dry foods, but my wife and I started splitting a 3oz can of Fancy Feast between the four of them daily a few years ago as a bit of a treat. The other three cats would mostly just drink the juice, and Bob would always hoover up what remained. He's always been a hoover, while the others are grazers.

When we got Bob back home after 7 days in the ER, we decided to remove all dry food at once, which may not have been the best idea, but it seems to have worked out fine. We tried the Purina DM for Bob, and the Friskies pate for the other three, and they didn't much like those, but they ate a decent amount. I wasn't happy with the amount Bob was eating, still being sick, and was a bit worried about the other cats as well, so we tried Fancy Feast classic pate, and they all at those quite well. When we had tried the pate while they were eating kibble, none of them really liked it, so we were a bit relieved at this point.

We're still feeding them all FF classics twice a day, with added water. Unfortunately, it makes it a bit hard to track Bob's intake, as he still likes to eat from all of the other cat's bowls after he eats about 2/3 of his, but we keep an eye on them to get a ballpark figure. The other cats don't like to eat as much at once, so we ended up just deciding to combine the remnants into a bowl or two and leaving them out for the grazers. They usually finish it all off in about 4 hours, and they get some lightly cooked chicken breast chunks as snacks a bit later.

We've seen a staggering amount of changes in all three cats since the switch to wet food. Bob (~6 years old) is more playful than he's ever been, and the others cats (13, 13, and ~11) have even gotten more playful. One of our older cats used to vomit fairly often on the dry food, and has not vomited once since the wet food change. He used to be very sensitive to ear touches, or scratching near his tail, and doesn't mind either at all anymore. Two who had slight dandruff have lost that problem, and an excessive fur shedder doesn't shed much now. We've had occasional problems with two of them peeing outside of the litter box, and that seems to have stopped. Numerous other things, as well. They all just seem happier and more healthy.
