Here is a guide to help you set up your signature. This will help the experts quickly know some info about your kitty.

It would be great if you could get some mid cycle testing in, you can sprinkles the test times around… mid cycle test really help us know how the dose is working. +2/3 is generally the onset (when the insulin starts to kick in) and +5/6/7 is the nadir (lowest point of the cycle) .. every cat is different though. The more data you know the more powerful you are :)
 
Welcome Carol and Charlie, the first thing I notice on your SS is that you are giving different doses every day or every couple of days.
It looks like you are basing the dose on his Pre Shots
Doses are based on how low the BG drops
We have no idea how the insulin is working for Charlie because of shooting different units every couple of days
Lantus likes consistency , shooting the same units both day and night
We also increase or decrease by 0.25 units at a time
You need to be testing Charlie more than just the pre shots both day and night
Maybe one day after the morning pre shot get a test in at +3, +6. and +9
During the night cycle same thing
Next day get a +4, +6, +8
It's like filling in pieces of a puzzle, the more tests the better
There arecp 2 dosing methods when using Lantus, whichever one you choose will tell you when to increase or decrease
When you decide which method will be better for you to follow please add it to your signature and spreadsheet

Here is a link helping us to help you link. If you noticed, our members have some basic information about their cat's in their signature. Thank you. I thought I was doing the right thing for him because he bounced around so much. Thanks to this group we have settled on 1 1/2U for now and the last 4 days his numbers have been great. I have done curves and will do one again this weekend. I wanted to give him a break because he had 3 vet visits this week with 3 sub-q's. We have established a great rapport at test time and I hate to ruin that, so I am giving him a day or two to chill out.

Charlie has been on lantus for over 2 years now. Not sure what method we are in. He is getting 1.5 units every 12 hours and I check his BG before every shot with curves every couple weeks. Now that I have realized I was changing doses to often )thanks to this group) I will start some spot checking to see where he is throughout the day. He has been on an all wet food diet (Ff and friskies pate) since before diebetes.

One additional factor with Lantus to consider. Dose changes are based on the nadir -- the lowest number in the cycle. For many cats, the low point in the cycle is around +6. It's helpful to do a curve (testing every 2 hours over a 12-hour period) if you're not sure where Charlie's nadir is. At the minimum, you need to get 4 tests every day -- your 2 pre-shot tests and at least one test during each cycle. Without any additional tests, you have no idea if Charlie's numbers are dropping and you need to lower the dose.

Thank you. It the Lantus board where I should be posting Charlies spreadsheet and looking for guidence on his dosing?
 
Ultimately, I'd encourage you to post there. There's a great deal of specific knowledge and experience with Lantus on the insulin specific board. Some of the Lantus members post on Health and some stay on the Lantus board. In pre-Moderator days, I largely stayed with the Lantus group.
