Normal numbers at home, high bg in blood and urine at vet’s?

Hi all,

Lulu had a follow up appt to make sure her UTI was gone and her kidneys were doing ok. The emergency had expressed concern because her urine was very diluted and her numbers were on the higher end of normal.

I heard back today and the vet said that the good news is her UTI was gone but that she had high glucose in her blood and urine. I have been checking weekly and at home her bg has been normal. I know she gets stressed but it’s rare for the sugar to show up in her urine as well. Her urine was also slightly diluted again.

She hasn’t been showing any symptoms (drinking more, peeing more) and she is losing weight slowly ever since I placed her on wet food. What could be going on? I understand it could the start of kidney issues.

The vet is sending the results to me over email, I haven’t received them yet.

How long was Lulu travelling to/at the vets before the blood and urine samples were taken? Was the high blood test result for serum glucose level or a fructosamine test?

By way of general information, it is possible for temporary stress hyperglycaemia to elevate blood glucose high enough and long enough for the renal threshold to be breached and have a significant amount of glucose spill over into the urine.

PS: For peace of mind it might be an idea to check Lulu's urine for glucose for a few days to make sure it's a one-off. You'd need Diastix or Ketodiastix to check for urine glucose.

It’s about 35-45 minutes to the vet... including the time waiting in the car for them to come and get her. It was only serum, no fructosamine was done.

Like Mogs said, some cats get very stressed at the vet’s office. It’s why home testing is so important. You don’t want to base a dose increase on a number that reflects stress.

Changing you cat over to canned food can cause weight loss. Compare the calories in what Lulu is currently eating vs her previous food. What you’re feeding her may be lower in calories. Alternatively, the low carb diet is more consistent with a species specific diet and Lulu is likely metabolizing her blood more efficiently.

Yes, I have just ordered urine glucose strips! Should be in very soon. The stress wouldn’t explain the diluted urine though.

Also I was hoping that I could get some good recommendations on food that is good for cats with kidney issues. All the prescription foods are too high in carbs!

Thank you for responding to me! Just thought I’d give an update. The vet said that Lulu doesn’t currently have kidney disease, but she is just scratching the surface of future kidney problems. She likely has very very mild degeneration of kidney function. One vet said that may explain the sugar in the urine. Another said it may just be that it’s just because she’s diabetic and even though her bg levels are normal, it’s still showing up in her urine. I’m still waiting on glucose strips (I accidentally ordered ketone only) In any case, she’s feeling more playful and energetic than ever because of her recent weight loss so no matter what I know she’s feeling great! :)
