One of my other fur babies, Hot Rod, Non-diabetic has excessive eye boogies. I asked the vet about it before and she said his eye was fine and to use saline drops, but that it could be feline Herpes. My parents cat has feline herpes and its cats eyes will water or crust. Hot Rod's is an eye boogie, or better grosser terms an eye jelly. It happens VERY frequently, and its not just a small amount of goop in the corner of his eye. It seems to come from his third eye lid but, as gross as it sounds, when I go to wipe it away it will be a long strand of gel, honestly probably about 1/4" to 1/2" long. His eye is not red, he doesnt rub it and is annoyed when I go and wipe his eye. My vet has told me that the only way to determine if it is herpes is to put him under anesthesia and lance part of the eye, I will not do this since theres no other symptoms and it doesnt seem to bother him except me annoying him lol. Any experience with something like this?

Oh another 'Hot Rod' kitty! I lost MY Hot Rod to that awful melamine debacle in 2007 - I still miss him so much.

Yep, try the L-Lysine - I got it at my local health food store. There are a couple of things that it could be besides herpes - there could be a misplaced hair that grew inside the eye OR it could also be a scarred tear duct. My DakotaKitty has a leaky eye like that too.

Thank you, I will try the L-Lysine. I definitely see that being a more logical option.

Yup, Hot Rod has been my special kitty lol. He was a stray, my husband found him running, basically tripping, over himself running across his car lot. He had tiny front legs, long back legs, a weird thick short tail, with a huge head....reminded me of Elbert Einstein, reminded my husband of a hot rod. LOL guess who named him. Come to find out he was only about 4 weeks old, covered in fleas and maggot larva EWWWWW and had a HUGE infection on his head from an animal biting his head. I really do think the infection did some damage because he has a special personality which is fine in this house since we're all crazy, then he's lacking natural instincts since he was away from his mom so early and I had to keep him away from my other two fur babies for two months since we were worried about FIV ex. he digs a hole in the litter box but stands IN the hole when he goes, doesn't have the balance of a cat.....he'll go to jump on the end table buttttttttt he'll under estimate and won't make it. LOL He's our crazy little kitty.

Spitzer had chronic eye goop and a blood test identified a bartonella infection which was treated.

Your vet may not be up to date ; there are a number of blood tests for feline respiratory (and other) infections. IDEXX labs is just one lab that could do these kind of tests.
