I know, it stinks but no turkey for Sugar babies....almost all turkeys are soaked in at least a 3% sugar solution and some as high as 15% as a preservative - even the 'organic' ones! It affects all parts of the turkey sooooo....no turkey for sugar babies. If you give them some, just be aware their numbers may rise.

We lubs you anyway even if we won't give you goodies....

Would that include a free-range turkey ordered from Whole Foods? Would it say it on the packaging? I will have to keep an eye on the floor because something always ends up there.

Robin,
Yes, most likely...unfortunately. It WILL say it on the package somewhere in TINY print. I bought what I THOUGHT was an organic raised/free range with no sugar solution...found it on the back bottom of the pkg in the folds of the seal...8% sugar solution. Peadoodle....

Wow!! I sooooo appreciate the warning. I never would have thought of it not that I plan on offering turkey meat to any of my brood but I will have to make sure that spills are cleaned up. Thank you so much.

I don't understand....
Why is there sugar added to turkeys...? Is that an American thing?
I don't eat meat but am pretty sure that our turkeys in the UK are just....well....'turkeys'..... confused_cat

A sugar solution is used to preserve them long enough to process them - some for freezing, some sold as 'fresh'. In the US, poultry must have 'something' done within 2 hours of the bird's demise.

Wow, I never knew that. I wasn't making a turkey anyway, but that's good to know. Thanks for the info.

But what about chicken? Is that preserved in a sugar solution also, or anything else bad? My girls are on a raw meat diet and I use chicken!

I'm beginning to wonder about this, too. I've seen chicken recommended for cats, but it would help to explain my Toby's wacky numbers if (some of?) it was...

Unfortunately there is also the same sugar solution used in SOME chicken too....and yes, it can cause some cats numbers to rise. It will say it somewhere on the pkg in small print also. KT's numbers rise....Dakota doesn't care for fresh chicken so haven't noticed it with him. He only eats a bite or two - KT would take down the whole chicken. :o :-D I notice it used more in the 'organic' or 'free range' chickens.

Another little clue - PetSmart's freeze dried chicken dog treats under the name of 'Simply Nourish' source 'human grade' chicken. That sounds quite nice...except they use the sugar solution - shoots KT's numbers up a LOT. Took me weeks to figure out that it was the BRAND of treats!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

I need to do a little number taking before I can say it is this, but now that I think about it (would never have suspected chicken...), the one day that Toby didn't have wacky numbers this week, he didn't have chicken either :o

We don't have PetSmart here, but I'll be sure to keep an eye out for that too.

You can't say that to a Brit
Just kidding, I hope you have a good one! And thanks for the information, especially for taking the time to message me directly with it :-D

Thanks so much for this information. Ive always chopped up some turkey for all of them (Sugar cat as well) and I thought that it was OK!! I've also given the sugar cat chicken also!!
Im so glad that Im only feeding Fancy Feast now and nothing else!! I think I'd better check all the supplements that I give her as well!! I never thought about these hidden sources of sugar - especially in meat. I guess I'll have to learn to shoot and prepare my own turkey next year!!!

Interesting..... that is the brand of chicken (simply nourish) I use for frog's treat (when I give him a food treat) for his tests... I haven't seen another brand with a reasonable quantity/price that I can offer them, because, of course, they all want it when he gets it : / I guess I'll just have to try giving him less each time :(
