During the SARS epidemic, which hit Toronto quite badly about 10 years ago, that virus was also found to be transmissable to pets. It was not clear if it was also transmitted from cats, but large numbers of civet cats (which were a food source in Asia) were destroyed there due to fears of this happening, and there was speculation (or fear) at the time that pet cats were passing the disease to humans.
