Lucy my newly diagnosed 11 year old calico, my baby, now does not trust me. I have tried to give her the shot on a table, when she is eating - she runs from me and hides. When she is on the table, she squirms and sometimes I miss. I feel like all she sees of me is a great big syringe. She doesn't act herself with me anymore. I don't know what to do. What kind of life is this? I am so depressed, I love her so much - what to do??

Tell us more. What size needles are you using? Where are you shooting? Are you holding the insulin in your hand for a few minutes to warm it up? (cold insulin can sting)

If you want to tell us where you live (city and state) maybe we have a member nearby who could help you out.

I am using a 31 needle. I am trying to "tent" as the vet said to do - trying to go by the neck area, also trying not to go to the same place in the same day. I do roll the insulin in my hand - how long can the needle with the insulin stay out before I inject? Now if she would only stay still for the injection. I live in Mahwah, NJ. Thank you....

There really isn't a time limit. I mean, you don't want it sitting out all day, but 30 minutes is no big deal.

Iggy, once I gained confidence, Pumbaa got much better about getting the shots.

Sometimes he's still a wiggle butt and seems to know what is coming, but then I sprinkle parmesan cheese on his food, and he can't resist that and ignores me while I inject him.

I also buzzed the fur off of Pumbaa's left shoulder area and right flank area, so that I could better see what I was doing, which caused me to have more confidence that I wasn't just doing fur shots since I could finally see what I exactly what I was doing during the injection, instead of just guessing.

Also, I got Pumbaa used to me tenting his skin, even when he wasn't going to get an injection. For both of our comfort levels.

I so feel for you! Don't be depressed! Your confidence in doing this has a lot to do with how Lucy reacts. And you'll gain confidence if you can distract Lucy during injection times, maybe by giving her a high-value, low carb treat she can't resist, which she will start looking forward to, even if you are injecting her.
